Risen 2: Dark Waters dev video illustrates the art of fighting and dirty tricks

Thursday, 12th April 2012 16:07 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Deep Silver and Piranha Bytes have released the fifth episode of its six part making-of series for Risen 2, which lays out the different fighting options in the game. It also explains how fighting is just one of the options, and how different styles – such as avoiding the fight altogether – can solve in-game quests just as much as brawn. Players will be able to sheath their swords and in its stead use voodoo to accomplish their goals, and even a few dirty tricks here and there. It’s all very interesting and detailed in the video diary below. Risen 2 is set for release in the UK April 27 on PC and May 25 on PS3 and Xbox 360.

This is looking very promising indeed.

Nice to know that there’s hand-to-hand, too. I’m a big fan of melee fighting in Mass Effect, since it leads to non-lethal takedowns. Knock out rather than kill, when I can. I’m a Vanguard, it’s what I do. Let the police sort it out.

I value games that give me that sort of option, really. Which made Skyrim more of a shame when the melee combat was all about different ways to kill, which is very short-sighted when you’re looking at the sort of people who play your game. Think about this in the future, Bethesda. Not everyone wants to be some drooling idiot who’s apparently taken a microwave to the brain.

That’s one of the things I like about Mass Effect 3, though. In ME3 it got even better. I kill the husks and things, not much choice there, but when it comes to mercs, or varren, or things of the sort… well, I’ve gotten very good at using Vanguard biotics and punches to do what I need to do.

It’s tricky and challenging, but saving lives (sometimes saving people from themselves) was never supposed to be easy. And it’s my choice in ME whether I pull a gun on someone and shoot them in the head, or whether I take care of them in a non-lethal manner.

I really value that in a game.

I’ll see how this holds up in Risen 2. I’m really hoping that they won’t take the Skyrim route and just make all forms of fighting lethal. But the way they’re describing this sounds like they may just have thought this through a bit.

    We shall see.

I’m pretty sure your biotic abilities in ME were lethal. Gothic had an interesting take on non-lethal violence. If an NPC was neutral or friendly, you can beat them up and loot them without killing them. They’d eventually get back up and be angry with you, but they wouldn’t attack.
