Metacritic cracking down on alleged Mass Effect 3 trolls

Tuesday, 6 March 2012 23:16 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Metacritic has begun removing suspiciously negative Mass Effect 3 user reviews.

“We have already removed user reviews which have broken our terms of use. We will continue to monitor user reviews and take the steps needed to ensure our users both comply with those terms and do not have to read other reviews which break them,” editor in chief Marc Doyle told Kotaku.

Doyle asked users to check the site’s terms of use and to report any trolling or other forms of abuse to admins.

Within minutes of the action RPG’s US release, large numbers of negative Metacritic user reviews began rolling in – many rating the game at the lowest possible score and leaving derisive, inflammatory comments.

Many of the accounts had been registered specifically to leave Mass Effect 3 reviews, leading many to suspect the work of trolls.

A number of other user reviews from established members give positive or balanced results, and the critical reception has been notably positive.

Mass Effect 3 is out now in the US, and arrives in Australia on march 8 and Europe on March 9, for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

That does not change anything if you look for example here: http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/mass-effect-3

    It’s still 4.3

So? Is it a DLC situation or the game is a complete disaster? I think it’s a disaster because ME 1 was ok and 2 was mediocre piece of a game in my opinion.

You have to ask yourself why its being bombed to hell and back though. I mean look at some other games that have high critical ratings like say… Half Life 2, the user rating on that is… oh hey its about the same as the critical one.

My fear is that Bioware is just going to take the easy way out and blame it on homophobia, even though im guessing a fair whack of the people “dirty protesting” on metacritic don’t give a shit either way.

Actually a hell of alot of people seem to actually be upset that sexuality has come down to a choice, a decision, “I think ill be gay now.”. Honestly Im not down with that at all, its your character you should be given the options to play that character as you wish.

In addition theres 2 or 3 bad user reviews gay men slating the fuck out of the nieve and childish way the gay romance has been written, again that just seems to be par for the course in terms of the series as a whole, why would a gay romance be different to the ham-fisted approach all the others have gotten?

So Im not going to simply dismiss all this horrible reception as bad trolling, Dragon Age 2 got the same treatment and it got a 94% from PC Gamer, look how well DA2 turned out.

I kinda just want Mass Effect to go away now, its out let the people enjoy it and let me pretend that it was a series of 1 game.

NB : When Metacritic removed the dodgy user reviews the average rating actually went down. So might not have been a good thing to do.

    #11 3 years ago
  12. triggerhappy

I don’t think the gay choice should have been in there at all. I don’t have anything against anyone who is gay but the world’s just not ready to be shown that in a video game and not make a song and dance about it.

    #12 3 years ago
  13. absolutezero

    It needs to happen.

Its happened before and oh look no one had a fucking problem with it. The Fable series from the outset has allowed you to court and even marry someone the same sex as your character.

Actually this is quite good, go look at the User Reviews for Fable 3 compared to the first game, now look at the Critical ones.

    #13 3 years ago
  14. triggerhappy

A fair point. But mass effect’s always been that much more serious about its relationships than fable. I wouldn’t be surprised if some gay people thought they were being misrepresented here, I mean I watch the male on female scenes and im major facepalming LOL. Suppose its like when they do something about a gamer on CSI or the likes, we’re always going on about how misrepresented we are.

The world wasn’t ready to let blacks sit where they wanted to on the bus either, but thankfully those people had the courage to demand a right to sit where they want. That’s usually how things change.

50 years from now the people who believe that hiding behind a stupid book makes them any less a group of common bigots are going to look just as hateful and ignorant as the last guys who tried to step on ordinary people for no reason.

    http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2012/03/05

I kinda feel like that sums up “Bioware sex” pretty well though :P

It’s about as interesting as a screen saying “And then they had teh sex”.

    #15 3 years ago
  16. frostquake

Don’t forget Skyrim, you wear the Amulet of Mara, and you get hit on by the same sex all the time. I am playing a Male, and an overwhelming of the people saying they are interested in me are Male, so where was the controversy in that?? I just don’t see an issue here at all. It is just a simple game, but since it is causing a dialogue, I guess it is good?

As of this writing there were only 31 Positive reviews and no Mixed or Negative reviews from Critics, which is very surprising, I truly was expecting a few Mixed Reviews.

Check what gameinformer have to say about the controvertial DLC:

    http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2012/03/06/mass-effect-3-dlc-from-ashes-impressions.aspx

“This is a critical slice of one of Mass Effect’s greatest mysteries, and though it feels kind of slimy of EA and BioWare to make people pay for it, I can’t say that I’m sorry I spent the money.”

User reviews are mostly trolls either flaming the game they hate or praising a game. You the most common scores for a game in metacritic is. ITS 0 OR 10. User reviews just sucks and dont serve any purpose because they are written by people who dont know anything about how to rate a game.

    Can I ask a question?

Why put sex into a video game in the first place?

I don’t want it there. It isn’t handled in a mature manor in most cases. I have not played ME3 and don’t intend to. Not because of the sex, but because it doesn’t appeal to me. But I will not play Fable because of it.

Fable actualy tracks sexual encounters. Including same sex and group sex situations. I know it makes me sound like another American affraid of sex. I am not. But sex needs to be handled with a bit more maturity, imo. Esp with a video game.

Its potrael is demening(most often to women). And it is juvenial. Look at the demographic. I understand that YOU(talking to no one/everyone) are not 14 yr old, but kids easily get the wrong idea from media. Games are worse because they are interactive, empowering.

It boils down to this. Period. And simple.

If your old enough to handle sex, your not as impressed with it in your games. Simple as. If your swayed into buying/enjoying a game because sex is in it(Fable/GTA), your prolly not mature enough to be able to handle it.

So I ask you, why even have that dynamic in the game to begin with?

I am older then most of you. I am not impressed one damn bit with it in the game. If a game has solid gameplay, would youhoneslty not buy it because it lacked a group sex element? Or if a game was only so-so would you go ahead and buy it anyways because it included your char having sex?

    I mean, really?

I can 100% gaurentee you that the only reason it is included in the overwhelming majority of games that include it is to drive sales.

I am reminded of Bevis and Butthead. Laughing and joking about Boobies.

    #19 3 years ago
  20. Fin

Metacritic user reviews are not the place to protest objections to a game. It just makes you look petty and mean.

    @19

Sex is an adult theme and part of gaming’s increasing maturity. I don’t understand why you think it shouldn’t be included. Should all films and books be sex free too?

“I can 100% gaurentee you that the only reason it is included in the overwhelming majority of games that include it is to drive sales.”

Please don’t throw out absolutely ridiculous stats, it just makes you look stupid.

    #20 3 years ago
  21. Ireland Michael

@19 Your entire argument is entirely mooted by the fact that its a choice.

If you don’t want to see it, simply don’t take that path in the dialogue. Its not like the game is forcing you at gun-point to be exposed to it.

I’m old enough (and married long enough) that I don’t need a game to get my jollies off (especially not with a woman as ugly as Chobot), but I don’t see the problem with its existing as an *optional* part of the universe. You can play through BioWare’s games without getting involved in romances with the cast, so again, you don’t have to ever expose yourself to this kind of content, unless you intentionally choose to seek it out.

The fact that anyone considers this an issue is pretty sad, and DSB’s comparison to black people’s rights is an entirely valid one.

og: you got a good point (again). i agree that sex in games should be handled with care. i haven´t played me3 yet so i cannot argue about how it is implemented there (hehe “implemented” beavis). i totally like the idea of gay love in a game though. the gaming world is full of homophobic douchebags. for a science fiction setting it´s totally natural to have gay love in it if you think about it. we will hopefully have a much more open minded society a few hundred years from now. if we just look at the history we can see that. so gay love being totally accepted in the future – 100% sure about that. the sexism of a gtaIV on the other hand totally turned me off. i think it was just lame and dull. the game and the whole franchise suffered from that. this is not what i would call a mature game. it´s a game for teens and for them it´s not that great…or god of war…pfff…hi kids. in fable i kinda enjoyed the mixed sex groupsex scenarios and i found them more gimmicky than anything and do not think they are insulting even for a younger audience…i mean you just had a black screen and some weird sounds. it must not mean that every teenager wants to have sex with as many people as possible at the same time after watching those black screens. sex is totally overrated in our society though. totally.

another take: why isn´t the porn industry into gaming yet actually? porn games would sell like crazy…i hope this will never happen!

ahhh i got it – you´ll need your hands off of your controller…well that´s a problem…ms, sony and nintendo with all their motion gaming stuff wont give them a platform, because they got reputation to loose, so they need to make their own console AND develop their own “games”…well that will take some hundreds of years for them to figure out….pheew.

Metacritic user ratings are essentially random. They obv depend on a few mostly sad reasons.. exclusivity, zealousness of the game’s fans (e.g. Half Life), game being weird/niche (Platinum titles), some vendetta of angry nerds against a publisher and so on.. It’s like a roulette.

Consider Bayonetta and God Hand. Is there any logic behind those? No.

It’s like counting agrees and disagrees on N4G.

@32, Your question is answered with the most simple of answers: because it adds more choice.

As Mike said, it’s entirely optional. You can totally avoid it or you can act like a total in-game whore. If someone wants to do the latter and having that option doesn’t hurt anyone, why not include it?

I really don’t think having sex in a game drives a game’s sales all that much if at all.

I for one followed the romance options in all the Bioware games because I like my character to do that. Not because I want to knock one off over it, but because I don’t want my character to be fighting with some big hefty blue balls.
