DICE 2012: Unreal Engine 4 to be revealed “later this year,” says Epic

Epic Games vice president Mark Rein has told G4 that the firm plans to unveil Unreal Engine 4 later this year. Speaking with the site during DICE 2012, Rein was quoted as saying: “People are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4 and how much more profound an effect it will have.” G4 expects more on the firm’s engine to he shown at DICE later today. If the firm is showing anything like it did at GDC 2011 with its Samaritan tech demo, then, wow.

I am eager to see this!!! I cannot wait :)
The Samaritan demo was an enhanced UE3, so it’s going to be better than that and it looked amazing.
I remember the UT3 demo for the PS3 before it was released and marveled at it, and i’m hoping for the same here.

That demo was running on GTX580 Tri-SLI (3 cards), however they said that it was just a quick proof of concept and with some work a single GTX580 should be capable to run it.Can’t wait too see how will they pull it of with consoles,I mean it will be a hard task for them even when the new generation consoles arrive.

According to CVG there’s more..concerning new systems (consoles)

” Speaking at the DICE summit (via LoudMouthedGamers), the executive said the new engine is now running on “systems we can’t name yet”. “

@5 Didn’t EPIC say that Unreal Engine 4 was being made for next gen consoles, and would not be unveiled until new consoles were available (think this was some time last year)?

Does this mean there will be a new XBOX 720 or PS4 at E3, or some time this year?

“TG Daily: Let’s talk about your game visions for the future and the next Unreal Engine? Where is EPIC going with the Unreal Engine 3.5 and 4.0?

Sweeney: The Unreal engine is really tied to a console cycle. We will continue to improve Unreal Engine 3 and add significant new features through the end of this console cycle. So, it is normal to expect that we will add new stuff in 2011 and 2012. We’re shipping Gears of War now; we’re just showing the next bunch of major tech upgrades such as soft-body physics, destructible environments and crowds. There is a long life ahead for Unreal Engine 3. Version 4 will exclusively target the next console generation, Microsoft’s successor for the Xbox 360, Sony’s successor for the Playstation 3 – and if Nintendo ships a machine with similar hardware specs, then that also. PCs will follow after that.”

@2 – Wow, Im speechless. That tech demo will give me something to look forward to for years to come. With that said I’ve been around long enough to know Next Gen consoles will not be able to produce gameplay graphics of that quality. However, Sony will probably release a prerendered game trailer in 2013 for a game they will release in 2017 with graphics that quality, but ultimately fall short on delivery *cough* Killzone 2 *cough* lol
