Report – Sony shipped 500,000 Vitas for Japanese launch

Wednesday, 21st December 2011 02:28 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Sony’s initial shipment of Vita consoles for last weekend’s Japanese launch falls about one-third short of pre-launch retailer reports.

Sony sent out 500,000 units to retailers, IGDA Japan vice coordinator Kyoshi Shin told Nikkei, as translated by Andriasang.

The figure runs contrary to earlier reports of an initial shipment size of 700,000.

Shin’s report highlighted Sony’s failure to sell through its entire initial shipment, and criticised the new tech’s pricing.

Eneterbrain revealed yesterday that initial reports indicate sales for the handheld’s first two days topped 321,000, a good 500,000 units well short of the 3DS’s performance over the same period. The market research company estimated the console would make 1.4 million sales in its first week.

You mean 50,000 units short… the 3DS did not sell 800k in 2 days.

i like the tech, but i just dont feel the games line up. Which is the opposite of 3ds with recent mario kart & mario 3d land, and next years paper mario and luigi’s mansion 2. Fuck, they can never get it right.

That is so not fair of you. I agree that the line up for the PSV is limited, but in all fairness, they will have more then 30+ games out in 3 months time. The 3DS, had only a handful games out in the same time period and NONE of the games were a good handheld seller like Super Mario 3D land and Mario Kart 7.
Infact, i had to wait 8 MONTHS for it when a really good A+++ game was coming out for the 3DS (LoZ:OoT does NOT count, it’s a remake, not a new game!!)
So even though I am in favor of the 3DS in opposition of the PSV, your argument isn’t valid at all!

Now, as for the news article.
It’s impressive that with such a steep price (mind you, you aren’t just buying the handheld also a very hefty memorycard and very steep prices fot the games!) the handheld still sold so well. But only time will tell if this becomes a niché product or something that will be seen mainstream.
If it becomes a niché product, then the price will have to drop to still be sold to the public (and I really hope that will be the case, cause the price is way to high for me!)
