Telstra to launch streaming games service in Australia

Tuesday, 13th December 2011 07:59 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Major Australian Telco Telstra has confirmed it intends to launch a streaming games service.

An initial report in the Australian claimed the service is in testing even now, and expected to launch in 2012.

Telstra told Gamespot the newspaper had jumped the gun a little bit.

“The story made it sound like that service was much closer than it really is. It is still at the concept stage,” a spokesperson said.

According to the Australian’s somewhat dubious report, the service will run on the company’s T-Box digital set top boxes, following an upgrade. Major publishers, with EA mentioned specifically, are said to be in on the deal.

The streaming games service is said to have been debuted as part of Telstra’s June announcement that it would invest $800 million in cloud technologies.

Major streaming games provider OnLive is yet to commit to an Australian launch, but advertising service Gaikai has data centres servicing Sydney.
