MGS Rising VGA trailer confirms Platinum as dev

Saturday, 10 December 2011 21:00 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Metal Gear Solid: Rising has been formally re-unveiled at the VGAs, confirming initial E3 rumours that Platinum Games is developing the title.

The news comes hours after the trailer managed to leak online before the show.

The video shows PMC groups similar to MGS4 and in previous trailers for the game, as well as ninjas in suits.

Previously confirmed to be a prequel to MGS4 and a sequel to MGS2, it’ll now actually take place after Guns of the Patriots, with Raiden returning to his ninja form.

Quinton Flynn, Raiden’s voice actor in MGS2 and MGS4, also makes an appearance, despite showing concern earlier this year he may not be involved with the title.

This will be Platinum’s first title being developed that won’t be published by Sega. Previously, all of its efforts, including Bayonetta, Madworld and Vanquish to name a few, were published by the company.

Its next effort, Anarchy Reigns, launches under Sega in early 2012.

Rising was announced at E3 2009 at Microsoft’s press conference, but was confirmed to be a multi-plat affair. Gameplay footage from when it was being made at KP wouldn’t emerge until a year later at E3, followed by a TGS demo.

Since then, it’s gone quiet. Until now, obviously.

MGS; Rising launches on PS3, 360 and PC in 2012. Trailer’s below. New shots are here.

gosh, what they have done with the title…

OH MY GOD… Platinum Games… It looks like a complete crap compared to previous trailer that was made by Kojima Productions.

It’s not Metal Gear at all even if they just deleted “solid” in it.

    Oh.My.god.

    Why? Why Konami?

Platinum Games better work on Bayonetta 2, but with this one… It’s just so meh… for the Metal Gear setting.

Platinum Games, huh? It’ll be absolutely amazing then.

I don’t see anything Metal Gear in this, i see Ninja Gaiden and i see Bayonetta in it, but it’s not doing anything for me. Didn’t the developers promised sneaking? I sure don’t see it.

  6. Erthazus

I see only Dinasty Warriors with crazy Bayonetta cut scenes.

    Horrible piece of trash.

Bayonetta was excellent, but this one is just trash.

Platinum does make great action games with fast movements and combat, but Metal Gear never really was about that in particular.
im very afraid they fuck this up now :(

I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt as it is Platinum and it is MGS, but my god, what a horrible first impression that trailer is. :/

  12. Gekidami

Looks interesting for a brainless hack’n'slash game, but its still meant to be within the Metal Gear series, and in that regard it looks fucking terrible.

Also, the original concept seemed a lot more interesting, and by that i mean it didnt sound it was Ninja Gaiden 4.

    @11

I know right?! Think of the Syndicate trailers, you know how many people complain about them??? LOADS!!

    #13 3 years ago
  14. Ireland Michael

@12 Raiden still looks like Raiden. The setting looks identical to MGS4′s. And the gameplay clearly isn’t just “face and attack”. In fact, it looks like Raiden is about to counter that gecko’s attack just before one of the scene’s end.

Not to mention this is a teaser trailer. You can’t assuming the game will or won’t have subtle stealth sections. I can totally see this having stealth kills.

  15. Mike W

@Erthazus I completely agree with you, this trailer is very disappointing. And what happen to the grpahics? The game doesn’t even look as good as it did when it was shown at E3 a couple of years ago. I don’t want to jump the gun, but I have a bad feeling about this title. The direction they’re taking is bad, real bad. The MGS series has always been about strong story telling and that is definitely not PG strong points. Damn I was so amp to see this game today, only to be disappointed by this shit.

Platinum Game are off the hook man! They are like Team NINJA

its such a shame the Cut+Take is gone as it looks like a regular hack n slash but F**KING hell!

    #25 3 years ago
  26. Gekidami

    @16
Yeah, the voice acting really stood out, seems Platinum specialize in bad voice work. I mean MGS4 wasnt exactly the best there is but it was several cuts above (seewatididthar?) what we hear in this full-on 3min non-teaser trailer.

And of course we all know that with Platinum’s infamous voice acting comes their infamous story telling and plot lines, and unless Kojima has some more to say at the VGA’s, he isnt working on the game himself in anyway.

…Sorry but i have no hope for this game, it looks like a cool fight sim but that isnt what i’m looking for in MGS. The first trailer looked a lot more slower paced and by the looks of it i’m betting the ‘cut anything, any time’ moniker has been reduced to ‘Slice up enemies with brutal finisher moves!’.

I’d be more impressed if this was a new IP or a sequel to an actual hack’n'slash game.

    #26 3 years ago
  27. Mike W

The most upsetting part, is that someone sat in a conference room and thought that this was a great idea to take the series.

    @Ireland Mike

Nothing is wrong with the trailer if this is the type of genre you like in your games. Most people, (including myself) that have been following the MGS series know that the game is about story with some addictive gameplay mechanics that includes both action and stealth elements. This trailer shows nothing but “over the top non-stop action” with some God-awful voice acting that has PG written all over it and the MGS series was never about that. It’s evident in your comment that you’re not as heavy into the MGS series as some of us are seeing how you see there’s nothing wrong the trailer. And you know what that’s totally fine.

    #27 3 years ago
  28. Ireland Michael

@24 Metal Gear Solid has always been camp. Do I *have* to remind you how tight Snake’s outfit was around his butt in MGS4? Or remind you of the line “Do you think love can bloom on the battlefield?”.

Complaining about a Metal Gear being camp, cheesy and tacky is like complaining about the sky being blue. You’re free to do so, but it’s always been that way…

This game was never intended to be Metal Gear Solid Raiden, and this cutting system was detailed years ago, just slower. There’s absolutely nothing here that should surprise anyone whose followed the game’s progress up to now.

    #28 3 years ago
  29. Fin

FOR FUCK SAKE CAN YOU NOT JUST WAIT TO PLAY THE GAME BEFORE COMPLAINING ABOUT IT

  30. mathare92

Bloody hell. That was a disappointment.

I mean this game could work in the way that Bayonetta did, in some sort of out-there universe with hack and slash mechanics and cheesy characters/dialogue. But as a METAL GEAR game… wow, just wow.

Like how did this piss poor trailer even get past Kojima?

    Gutted. Just gutted.

@29 It’s just gamers and fans stating their opinions on the trailer, relax bro.

  32. albo88

@ #27 if u are a true fan like u say then you should have leraned something from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and how laugable was raiden as a charter i mean come one lets face it we all know it that will ended like this
it makes no sens having stealth elements with a charter that have a blade as long as in the crusade era

im a veteran of MGS as well and i totality support this new game mechanics

a but the story there is nothing to look here that’s why peoples loved mgs4 cos it told the end of a warrior snake died
now have fun playing remakes or 3ds titles that go back in time the main story of the game the hart have stooped working

    #32 3 years ago
  33. Ireland Michael

@27 ” It’s evident in your comment that you’re not as heavy into the MGS series as some of us are seeing how you see there’s nothing wrong the trailer.”

The only thing “evident” right now mate is your tendency to make broad assumptions out of flimsy connections. I have played and completed every single Metal Gear title ever made – including all the spin-off. Many of them multiple times.

I’m just not adverse to people actually trying something different with an established name. I have no desire to play the same old shit over and over and over again.

It’s the very attitude being portrayed by people in this news story that is the reason we get the same old shitty war games and sports titles regurgitated onto the market on a yearly basis.

    #33 3 years ago
  34. Gekidami

    @30
It probably didnt get past Kojima because he wasnt there to check it, he’s made it quite clear (unless this changes tonight) that he has nothing to do with the game. The only reason he keeps getting shoved on-stage is because he’s the face of the franchise.

    #34 3 years ago
  35. JimFear-666

Looking at the Platinum stuff i just can’t think of quality.

Im a huge grindhouse movie fan and this felt like an awesome grindhouse trailer but im not sure what to think about the graphics because they are definitely shit compared to the last vid

    #40 3 years ago
  41. Ireland Michael

@38 The cutscene animations are fine.

In game, the MGS games have *never* had good animation. They have always been rigged, stiff and unresponsive. Uncharted they are not.

    #41 3 years ago
  42. absolutezero

You know why people disliked Twin Snakes, because it had goofy shit like Snake running up missiles and kicking them back to where they came from.

Now im not trying to say that MGS is gritty or realistic or serious, what im trying to say is that this game is taking place in another World from MGS4. Sure everything might look the same but in the same universe that had that microwave tunnel sequence you can’t have running up the side of a Ray and cutting it in half with a sword.

Im sure it’ll be fun enough it’ll just be fun in the MadWorld way instead of the Vanquish/Bayonetta way.

    #42 3 years ago
  43. Erthazus

@41, sorry but you are incorrect, MGS4 had amazing animations in every aspect there is.
In the cut scenes, in the gameplay animations were one of the best.

to this day it’s a great looking game on the PS3.

this one is not and everyone see that. Stop being a defensive Platinum fanboy. We got it, you like Platinum Games, i also like some of their games like Bayonetta. But this one is not a quality title especially after this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtM3PGyiQUc

You know why people get angry about this and DmC because if you removed the name from the trailer no one would be able to tell they were related.

Show someone Shattered Memories and theres a good chance they’ll be able to guess its a Silent Hill game.

I want new experiences more than anything, its why I have such a huge collection of games but im not going to sacrifice a series well known strengths and perceptions because it makes the title a safer bet for publishers.

Fuck cheapening whats come before to sucker in fans.

  46. LOLshock94

Cant stop watching this it is sick and i don’t give a shit what anyone thinks, this is a huge improvement from the last vid (accept the graphics) it looks more fun and less repetitive.

  47. OrbitMonkey

@45+1, Too true. You hear Metal Gear & your expectations are set. I bet a few people were expecting a Tenchu style game, but in the Metal Gear universe. Stealthily taking on gun toting goons with sweet sword skills…

…and they seem to be getting a arcade hack and slasher… I can see why their disappointed…

    #47 3 years ago
  48. Ireland Michael

@42 Yeah, let’s completely forgot about that one sequence in MGS4 where Raiden takes out a number of geckos while jumping and bouncing around the screen like a cyborg on acid…

Your point is moot. Raiden did the exact crazy shit in MGS4 that he’s doing here.

@45 Exact same characters. Almost identical character designs. Visually identical locations. Enemy units with no visual changes (the geckos).

    Yup, totally unrecognisable.

@48 But combat look like Devil may cry/Bayonetta unlike 2010 trailer which looked like sword was using just as secondary and to so flashy and so many hits to kill one guy IMO.
Which rise a question:What is Konami doing instead?

    #51 3 years ago
  52. Gekidami

    @48
Exact same characters? In MGS4 Raiden was quiet, depressive and suicidal. In this trailer he seems to be a wise cracking smart ass. Even in MGS2 he wasnt like that.

I’m sorry but the only thing thats “moot” here is your opinion on anything related to Platinum because you’re such a fanboy. And i dont mean that as a little insult, you literally worship the guys.

  53. absolutezero

Yes because the mooing robots are akin to a Ray. One of which nearly went onto kill Snake when he was in Rex, look I remember Gray Fox under Rex’s foot, I remember Kuwabara bullet hands. Nothing before was this level of “one of my Japanese animes”.

That scene on the train, running on the ceiling, nothing looks like MGS4. Nothing.

Ac!d 2 has closer visuals than this.

    #53 3 years ago
  54. Gekidami

^ Yeah, the past MGS games have always managed to be overall very ‘western’ with just enough of a Japanese hint. Thats what made them interesting. This on the other hand is… Well, anime.

    #54 3 years ago
  55. absolutezero

The exact anime shot was the cutting Ray in half thing, in the scene that IM mentioned each wound and attack that Raiden inflicts on a moo moo defined by the length of his sword and where he hit it.

Much like the choppy choppy bits appear to be in this video, then its all “The power of my friends gives me the strength to cut the very air with my blade!!”

    “I WILL CUT THE HEAVENS!!”

    /lasor sword beam.

    #55 3 years ago
  56. Gekidami

Its also worth pointing out that every fight Raiden had in MGS4 ended with him getting his ass kicked. Yeah, he cut up some Geckos, but he still needed Snake to take a shot and save him before Vamp put him in a critical state.

    #56 3 years ago
  57. m2stech

Well that was a bit of Devil May Cry, God Of War, Ninja Gaiden…and Metallica!

    #57 3 years ago
  58. Ireland Michael

@51 The sword was secondary? I guess that’s why it was the focus of *every* single preview of the game then.

Seriously, now you people are just making shit up.

You can’t assume there won’t be any stealth in the game simply from a teaser trailer anyway, but this is Raiden. He’s a cyborg ninja with a katana. He’s not going to sneak. This isn’t meant to be the same game.

@52 I was talking about how they look. As for how he acts, do you remember the part of the story in MGS4 where Raiden disappears for half the story to be “fixed”? That’s when this game is set. You can even hear a voice that is clearly Dr. Pettrovich in the voiceovers.

Do you actually think the story isn’t going to be mandated by Konami? It obviously is. The framework for it was set down intentionally in MGS4 *solely* to accommodate this game.

Anyway, have you guys even considered for a few seconds *why* this has been outsourced to Platinum? The game had barely progressed whole being developed inhouse for years, so much so that it even went through a change of producers in the middle of the project. It’s pretty bloody obvious that Konami had a nice tool, but didn’t have a staff with the talent to implement it into a full blown game.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT!?

First GSC closes down its studio, then Bioware apparently starts making RTS and now Platinum making a Metal Gear Solid Game? Can it get any worse?

Rising was the first MGS game in a long time i looked forward to … this, this is just unbelievable. What the fuck was Hideo smoking? Was he tortured? Did someone blackmail him or something?

For people who didn’t get the chance to see this abomination of a trailer:

    http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xmwd5f_videogames

80′s rock music you’d only find in Dynasty Warrior games, crunch-worthy dialogs, already uninteresting story and just fucking stupid character-design. Even the gameplay looks horribly anime and uninspired.

Nothing even hints at it being a Metal Gear Solid game.

I remember the Original Developer once said how the game would be about just cutting people in half. Instead Platinum choose the dumbest and cheapest thing someone could imagine. Exactly what i would’ve expected from them.

Man, i can’t believe this, this is just messed up. I mean this is a joke. This has to be a joke, right? I was already beginning to fear that something might be up with the game, but this? This is beyond horrible. Even Team Ninja would’ve been a better choice. What the fuck were they-

you know what? I can’t. I fucking speechless. They must have been mindfucked when they decided to give this game to a developer like Platinum.

    @73

I don’t pretend to have played or enjoyed any Metal Gear games although i was looking forward to Rising after the first trailer.

After seeing this trailer however, all i can see is average, average, average.

I know you enjoy seeing Developers and producers trying a different direction with projects (as do I), but how about Platinum games taking a different one?!

This looks almost identical “cookie cutter” style with all their other titles. When handling something as important as Metal Gear, did they really think a Ninja Gaiden / DMC / insert over-the-top hack and slash, would be good enough?!

Fans of the series have a right to be pissed off. That is until they show MGS 5 running on PS4! :)

    #74 3 years ago
  75. Ireland Michael

@74 It’s a game whose lead star is a robotic ninja that wields a katana and has a body made of 90% metal.

It was *always* going to be a hack and slash. Anyone who thought otherwise was deluding themselves.

I think the worst (funniest) thing about people’s criticism of his trailer is the fact that they actually consider the standard Metal Gear intelligent in the first place…

    #75 3 years ago
  76. Freek

I like the look of this allot! And the fact that Platinum is making it is even better news, Bayonetta was amazing and it seems the perfect fitt for this game.
We probably diden’t hear about Rising for a long time becuase the Metal Gear team can’t do action games that well. They ran into trouble and came up with the perfect solution: get an action game studio to make this.
Means they can focus on the stealth series in house.

  77. monkeygourmet

    @75

I stopped playing MGS4 after about a couple of hours because i was fed up of being spoon fed, pseudo-intelligent babble.

I knew i’d mainly playing it to watch cut scenes but the gameplay in between really wasn’t upto scratch for me.

Maybe i’ll go back to it sometime although i don’t really like having to force myself to play games.

  78. YoungZer0

Huh, wait. That wasn’t just a bad dream? Oh man … :(

I have to admit Raiden is one of my favorite character in the Metal Gear Solid Universe. Yes, he gets emo from time to time, but so does everybody in MGS. Hearing him say things like “Let it rip” just makes me want to puke.

I seriously think even Michael Bay would say “Stop, these dialogs are stupid.”

It’s fucking roadrunner. I expect Egoraptor to deliver something like this, a parody of what could go wrong with MGR if you give a to a developer with brain damage.

    #78 3 years ago
  79. DaMan

Well, that looked much better than what they showed last year, obviously the visuals ‘re downgraded with it being properly in-game instead of some boring tech demo where he just cut melons.

I’ll take Platinum’s clever combat over Konami’s pseudo stealth any day of the week too.

MGS was radically different to what the old MSX titles were about so why not indeed.

+1 to everything MoC said here.

  83. MegaGeek1

This game looks amazing! Whats with all the hate? Did we all watch the same trailer? Pretty sure I saw Raiden fucking suplexing a metal gear.

Any self respecting MGS fan should at least be optimistic enough to hope that Kojima wouldn’t attach his name to an shitty product, cuz last time I checked he has a pretty good track record.

And how about some optimism for a game set in the MGS universe? You know, the same universe that’s always been so rich with story. Maybe this game will be a mind fuck on a Matrix level?

Not to mention, that trailer had a distinctly Japanese feel to it, and its about god damned time! Im getting pretty tired of an entire generation of video games that are developed decidedly western in order to make $$$$$.

    Open your minds people.

    #83 3 years ago
  84. lexph3re

Ok first off If this game is un-canon to the MGS universe then I will be fine. If it takes place on a string theory bases where IDK maybe Solid Snake is dead then I would be fine with that. But, Originally they we’re saying this would be attached to the MGS storyline between 2 and 4. And from what the trailer shows it contradicts THEE ENTIRE FLOW OF MGS 1-4.

For instance in MGS4 when Raiden is Pawned by Vamp. This Raiden would do MORE then Own him. When Raiden was captured by all those Geckos, This Raiden Would ANNIHILATE them before they could do anything! This Raiden could own a MGRAY with 2 arms So OUTER HAVEN WOULD HAVE BEEN A CHALLENGE with 1 Arm.

Why are they giving him an eyepatch? He has NO CONNECTIONS TO BIG BOSS OUTSIDE OF SOLIDUS. And Solidus didn’t get the eye patch until after the harrier incident on the Big Shell. That Eye patch MAKES NO SINCE!

Jack the Ripper is the only thing that make’s since out of that ENTIRE trailer. We would actually get to explore the past side of Jack. But, Everything else contradicts the entire flow of 4. I already am 50/50 with Platinum because Bayonetta was utter shit but Vanquished was a great game.

Hell after Vanquished I kinda could see them making a Rising game. BUT NOT LIKE THIS! I too like over the top action styles like everyone else but there is still a feel to it.

I just don’t want my favorite series to be destroyed in the blink of an Eye.

    #84 3 years ago
  85. YoungZer0

@83: “You know, the same universe that’s always been so rich with story.”

Yeah, i guess you saw a different trailer, because all i saw is Platinum taking a huge dump on exactly that. Hideo created a huge world, with lots of remarkable and rememberable characters. This doesn’t even try to be a Metal Gear Game.

Have you not heard the same dialog lines i have? You can’t fix that. Platinum Games just shows us again that they are indeed incapable of delivering a game that isn’t just insultingly stupid.

Why the fuck don’t they just hire a writer? I mean all the stories of their previous game have been a disaster. The dialogs, characters and character-design have been too.

This is supposed to be a Metal Gear Game. Set in the same Universe as MGS4 and MGS2. This is not how Raiden would talk. We know that, because unlike characters like Dante, he has depth. We know that he hates his past, hates his history as a child-soldier. We know that he doesn’t enjoy fighting, but he does it because it has to be done.

We know that he likes to go emo from time to time.

Nothing in trailer reminds me of Raiden. Lines like “This is gonna be fun.” or “Let it rip”? Raiden would never do that!

This is the usual-embarrassing-macho-guy we all saw in stupid games like Vanquish and Gears. And this is exactly what we don’t need: Another stupid game.

Hideo should go over there and bitchslap every single of these assholes, because they are about to destroy what Metal Gear stood for and make it to a mediocre mass of hyper-bullshit.

At least hire a fucking writer, you 8-year olds.

Yes… Open your minds to the same old shit jap devs churn out everytime the hero has a sword… But in the MGS universe!!

  87. MegaGeek1

@84 – Yea he has an eye patch, so wouldn’t that little clue insinuate that he lost his eye, and all but confirm that this game takes place AFTER MGS4? Maybe he somehow gained an eye between this game and MGS4. Also, you’re going NUTS over a story you know nothing about. NOTHING, NADDA, ZIP! A 3 minute trailer and your ready to say “it contradicts THEE ENTIRE FLOW OF MGS 1-4.” Get a grip bud!

@85 – Its pretty clear you have a hard-on for these devs, so Im not going to bother wasting my time. I just worked a 12 hour night shift and Im ready for bed. I’ll just reiterate the same thing I said above. YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS GAME OR STORY!! All anyone that isnt clairvoyant, or totally fucking insane, can reasonably infer from that 3 minute trailer is that Raiden uses his sword to dice people up. You want to play the guessing game about everything else until you go crazy, and probably get it all wrong, then by all means.

@86 – Right, I’ll just stick to my 1st person military shooters and my 3rd person monster shooters. You know what, maybe I’ll just play my sandbox superhero games, cuz they’re all so fucking original too.

That sounds exactly like a story written by the retards at Platinum Games.

    #89 3 years ago
  90. DaMan

I was merely pointing out that it’s in fact set after the last one.

And that’s as in any of the MGS but without all the babbling. It’s like arguing who had a better story, Voltron or Transformers.

    #90 3 years ago
  91. lexph3re

#87 please read again what I said before you start jumping into your half assed analysis.
    1. I know everything about the MGS timeline Why? BECAUSE I FUCKING LOVE THE FRANCHISE! So please don’t sit here and tell me I know nothing about metal gear you know nothing about me.
    2. The Eye patch is symbolic in the Metal Gear Franchise and also has story relevance in the series towards a distinctive feature of big boss and 1 of the reasons Old Snake has the Solid Eye. So Raiden having an Eye patch is FUCKING stupid. That is not raiden, if anything he would hold something that was a homage towards Frank Jager or Olga. The Eye patch is pointless for Jack as a whole.
    3. The trailer immediately contradicts the SoP system that was in place if in fact this game is to take place between 2 and 4. HOW? Because the Technology far exceeds that of MGS4 and therefore renders the technology outside of SoP’s Scope.(potentially)
    4. Raiden at the end of MGS4 get’s his body back. So if this takes place after that then that means something has led Raiden to Abandon his family again. Going against his words to his Son and Rose about being there for them. Making him a douchebag until further details are released.
    5. The Physics alone contradicts his capabilities if held between 2 and 4. Which that is where the intentions of the story were to go.
    6. I also stated that if this is like a string theory principle(meaning uncanny to the real MGS storyline) then I would be ok with that and therefore look further into it. but if it goes into being canny then I really just think they screwed up a great potential that Raiden had for the sake of an Action thriller.

So please don’t come in here trying to bash my opinion on the matter when I can see complete contradictions to the storyline of the saga. If this is near future then they can easily screw up a potential in reviving Solid snake or create a great way to bring him back.

    #91 3 years ago
  92. Ireland Michael

@91 Regarding Point #4, I think it ought to be pointed out that Jack & Rose also said the very same thing at the end of MGS2 – that it was time for them to finally focus on what mattered and live for themselves… and yet by MGS4 he had already abandoned everyone he cared for and completely destroyed his life and body.

Guy has commitment issues. Just sayin’.

Regarding #3 and #5, the game is now set after MGS4, as explained on the official site, so most of your assumed “contradictions” are now moot.

    #92 3 years ago
  93. MegaGeek1

@91 – Okay, you know your MGS and are a true fan. I cant respect that. That, however, wasn’t my point, and I didn’t half ass analyze anything. My point was you have no idea how this game will play into the MGS timeline. NO FUCKING IDEA! Unless of course you developed it. So just give the game the benefit of the doubt for now. Or, continue to drive yourself crazy over rumours and speculation. I don’t give a fuck.

  94. Brenna Hillier

    Updated with working trailer.

    #94 3 years ago
  95. lexph3re

@92 Actually none of my points are moot. Because they we’re all relevant before official announcements. And considering that after reading the article they recently posted. This game isn’t even in the Solid Saga meaning that it is not canon to the Solid series whatsoever but a branch off game. In which I also stated that I would be okay with.

    @93 ^

    #95 3 years ago
  96. osric90

This is not Metal Gear Solid. Period. It’s a mere spin off at this point (equivalent to Ac!d). And to the MGS haters, sorry you couldn’t understand one of the only good storytelling structures (even when it has hours of cutscenes) in videogames… go back to CoD and to your shallow films.

  98. Christopher Jack

This trailer surely didn’t do the game any justice. As for just about any game, I’ll wait until the player reviews start pouring out before I decide to spend my money on the game. Never been a huge fan of MGS, mainly from the lack of playing many of the games, but I really enjoyed #4 despite how boring it can be, especially at the start. I did play a little of Portable Ops before my PSP was stolen & really liked it & loved how you could arrange your own militia group, love micro management, even if it means just picking a bunch of guys before the game & switching in between them.

    #98 3 years ago
  99. lexph3re

One of the things that caught my eye about rising was the restraint option. Kojima was going for a game that incorporated an option for killing with/without skill or dismantling your opponent with pure skill making everything cutable. I loved the fact yo could cut someones gun up without killing them and scaring the rest of the people. Now it’s just Mindless, It’s a platinum game.

Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy mindless games. But, I thought Konami had something special in the works. Now this is just another beat’em up.

    #99 3 years ago
  100. YoungZer0

@99: They had that planned? Didn’t know that. God-damn that sounds nice. A way not kill humans? That’s something i always appreciated about the previous MGS titles. I really hope it’s more than just mindlessly killing though. But i kind of doubt that. Looks like the cutting isn’t a huge feature anymore, just a finishing move.

    #106 3 years ago
  107. YoungZer0

    Let me clarify:

Mostly i was talking about how dumb their games are and how they – judging by the trailer – seem to be unable to make the cutting more than just that. At least the previous devs had an idea, they wanted to do something different than just another Ninja Gaiden. This? This is just killing. Don’t care how many combos there are, it’s just mindless stabbing and cutting. It seems they tossed the idea of depth quickly out of the window.

    #107 3 years ago
  108. DaMan

Well, fair enough. Seeing as how I thought every single MGS was literally shit, and it was fine for the Dmc reboot to throw everything about the old games out of the window, I don’t think there’s a problem ;)

And I really don’t see some crappy gimmick which they showed last year serving as anything other than a good Move application.

    #108 3 years ago
  109. lexph3re

The DmC change is mainly towards character appearance. Otherwise the gameplay looks practically what you would expect of a DMC game. Rising was intended to be more then that. The fact that we could’ve had a functional move/kinect sword game while still appeasing the hardcore audience is what was most impressive about Rising. Now it’s just another slasher, There is such a thing as expectations that people acquire over a game while it’s being showcased.

    #109 3 years ago

http://www.gamesradar.com/e3-2010-metal-gear-solid-rising-may-use-kinectmove-plus-more-details-revealed/ Theres one of many sites that confirms the pevious intentions

-■It will not be a mindless hack ‘n slash title. The player will have to precisely cut certain weak parts of many enemies to do them in. Cutting is not limitless, either. Some bad guys will have parts that can’t be sliced and diced. So you’ll have to aim strategically.

-■The katana is considered a stealth weapon. And Kimura hinted you will be able to take on enemies with rockets and other weapons.
^ This hint’s that the kitana will like in Mgs2 where you could use the bunt end of the sword to knock out enemies

    #112 3 years ago
  113. YoungZer0

@112: Just reading that depressed me. :(

    #113 3 years ago
  114. DaMan

Thanks for the link. Btw the last few points greatly remind me of Bayonetta’s battles. namely … “It will not be a mindless hack ‘n slash title. The player will have to precisely cut certain weak parts of many enemies to do them in … you’ll have to aim strategically.”

I recall reading about Project Draco and they were saying how with motion controlled games it ends up way too easy or way too difficult, thus more so I really don’t see anyone being able to do something like you say without being on the rails. Intentions were indeed there, but the fact that nothing worthy of showing to public so far exists is telling. The same less involved plot stated in the Gamesradar article and the lack of any official info regarding gameplay makes me look forward to PG take on it.

    #114 3 years ago
  115. lexph3re

But that was our overall disappointment in the matter. I had been following the articles and dev diaries on this and hearing from their sit ins it was supposedly going to be amazing. Now they just abandoned it and it’s gone to a stripped out version of what it was intended to be. The final boss of bayonetta (UGH I HATE TALKING ABOUT THAT GAME!) was still mindless the heaviest thought it provoked was running from the Blackhole and trying not to get turned into little Cereza.

other then that I just don’t see why that game has been hyped up as such an awesome game. It was completely unstable, that missle and motorcycle SCENES were so poorly designed. And, the default gameplay was extremely repeatitive until you beat the game to collect the REAL weapons. THAT SHIT WAS SO REDUNDANT!

Man that game brings back bad memories…. However the case. Like I’ve stated in the past Vanquished brought back some sort of hope in Platinum. But, This is still a cherished IP and from the initial details granted it is going the opposite of said intentions. I just wonder what stopped them from making that demo we saw last year of guns being cut up and slicing pillars to make roofs fall on top of people.

    #115 3 years ago

That is a disappoinment with motion controls in general. Like I was saying, the decision to make Project Draco being on the rails came from obvious difficulties making anything beyond prototype either.

I don’t see it being a stripped version because nothing other than melons cutting demo was shown, and they’re yet to say anything regarding the new one.

Thanks for mentioning what was perhaps the least involving moment in the whole game, and telling me you didn’t get the intentionally retro stylized mini games. I take it you hated the Sonic rings too, them silly pointless things. I don’t know what you mean by ‘unstable’, and neevr really felt the game was tedious with the myriad of combos, abilities and you turning into a cat, bats and a crow.. As well as the enemies all requiring various approaches on anything above Normal difficulty.

Perhaps Jeanne or out of body Alfheim challenges would be better examples of what I was referring to.

I don’t really see how the game becoming motion controlled makes for a less repetitive experience, or Bayonetta being “repetitive until you beat the game to collect the REAL weapons” at that since you get the best ones during the original playthrough and the handguns, bazillions or nunchaks were the most redundant and repetitive ones, unless you played a different game actually..

Was Vanquish released under a ‘Vanquished’ name in US btw?

This being an in-game footage as opposed to prototype with all the ‘guns being cut up’ existing in the form of nothing but intentions probably what stopped them.

I’m not as into the retro thing as other people are. I love retro games but not a main factor in what I find a game awesome for. The Sonic rings or “Halos” was cool but not like everytime i saw them sonics in my mind. Honestly, a lot of people give passes to games based on that since of nostalgia.

Also, like I said in past demos Raiden had an effect on his entire environment cutting up people, guns, tanks, buildings and respectfully watermelons.lol But, thats gone now.

And I just spelled Vanquish wrong my bad.
