Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown hitting XBL, PSN next summer

Sega’s announced it’s to bring a refined edition of Virtua Fighter 5 to PlayStation Network and Xbox Live next summer.

Called Final Showdown, it’ll release as a standalone game that will feature a massive overhaul from when the fighter released at retail on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2007.

It’ll have two new characters from the 19 that’ll be in the game, including one new character called Jean Kujo and VF3 fan-favorite Taka-Arashi, as well as revised mechanics and balance, simplified controls and more.

It’ll also have a “new” single-player mode, leaderboards and one-on-one online battle system.

“Virtua Fighter 5 has always been an authentic arcade fighter, even when played from the comfort of a home console. And, like any proper arcade dynasty, we’ve continued to support, expand and tweak the game in the years since its release,” said VP of Sega West’s digital business arm, Haruki Satomi.

“With Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, we get to bring the ultimate expression of competitive one-on-one gaming to console players in one perfect package.”

VF is good but it has no real scene or following in the UK. Street Fighter is the game you should be playing if you want healthy competition (albeit still on a small scale)

As the single handedly best game in this entire genre, it deserves far more than a downloadable release.

It would be a pity to see them completely strip the Quest Mode out of this game for the digital release. I lost so much time on that in Virtua Fighter 4 and 5.

I’m definitely excited about trying out that new guy and seeing how he plays though.

And yes, there may not be as big a scene for this game as there is for other fighting game, but that doesn’t change the simple fact that it’s the deepest, most refined games of its class, and I for one am far more interested in quality over popularity in this cause.
