NowGamer reports the specifications below come direct from Sony.

    GPU frequency is strange and it’s dissapointing that it’s just 512 and Camera resolution is a bit meh.

    but overall very nice for a handheld. It will be interesting what Apple will bring to the table. I’m 100% buying this next year.

    PS: It’s hillarious that handheld have more Ram than PS3 (actually.. to be honest PS3 does not have even full 256 because OS eats too much memory already).
    I guess that we won’t see crappy OS performance this time around and party chat is there i think. Yaay Sony.

    1. The CPU clock speed is not known but that ARM processor can be clocked upwards of 2GHz although it will be underclocked to preserve battery life.
    2. The camera is not meant for high quality picture taking that is why they sacrificed Pixel density for faster FPS (120fps / 60fps) and is also a low light sensor so it pretty much can see clearly in the dark like the PS Eye
    3. PS3 has 512MB RAM hard partitioned into 2x 256MB and both can be accessed by the PS3 if need for gaming. PS3 OS is about 50MB which leaves a total of 462MB at the developers disposal.

    @3, GDDR 3 and XDR is not the same thing like your typical 512 mb ram that is shared between CPU and GPU.
    Because of that Ps3 does not include party chat and OS performance is very bad when you want to browse something while playing games.

    So basically PS3 have only 256 Mb Ram and OS takes a large part of that. Even John carmack admitted that problem.
    Just try playing Killzone 2-3 or Heavy Rain on the PS3. switch to OS and it’s madness.

    PS3 does not have Party because the OS and the whole PSN architecture was not planned from the start to support it. It has nothing to do with XDR and DDR RAM or some shit. It supports in game, private chat and video chat so it can support cross game chat. Just a matter of redoing the whole chat system on the server side and update the PS3. It is of course a lot harder than that
    360 has a shared 512MB RAM which is split between the OS,Video,Game. OS takes 32MB
    PS3 has a hard partitioned 512MB RAM which is split between the OS,Video,Game. OS takes 50MB
    PS3 does not basically have 256MB RAM just because it is hard partitioned and run at different speed. The OS foot print is split 7MB on system RAM and 43MBs on the XDR main RAM
    The PS3 browser is an old clunky browser and sony is not known for having an OS but Microsoft is. In fact the whole microsoft empire is built on having an OS so they can of course make better OS and software architecture than Sony.

    Camera’s are shit but no one should care, you would generally need at least 8MP, although some are happy with 4-5MP (not me), to replace a basic camera & i’d rather pay a lot less for a feature that will mainly be used for a gimmick.

    Only real disappointment for me is the lack of video/audio codecs that go against the PS3′s relatively open stance in that regard(namely XviD, DivX, etc), hopefully it’ll be patched later to support it like the Xbox 360. It’s disappointing to me because that means I’ll have to use my phone’s precious battery power if I want to watch shit on the go, or convert files which i don’t want to do.

    The lack of detail regarding built-in storage is also scarey although not surprising, they could have at least included 16GB in the basic model & 32GB in the premium 3G model but whatever :(
    Now we’re going to be stuck with some overpriced proprietary crap in typical Sony fashion, at least the PS3′s hdd wasn’t proprietary so I give them credit for that.

    Well, 512Mb is not much, but you should count, that 940*544*16 frame is 1Mb size. And 1200*720*32 is 3 times bigger (fullHD is 7,5 times bigger). And I hope this 512Mb memory is not crappy slow DDR3, something faster.

    About CPU it’s funny, but 4 * Arm 9 is just tell us nothing about it performance — more important is addons, such as FPU, that could give significant boost on 3d games, internal decoders and so on.
