Report: 50% of US Netflix usage is via console

Research company Nielson has concluded that half of all users of the TV and film streaming service use their home console to watch content. Facts and figures below.

The findings, based on interviews of 12,000 Netflix users in March, identified that while 42% of users view content on their home computers, 50% use their consoles. The console breakdown comes in at 25% for Wii, 13% for PS3 and 12% on Xbox 360.

Rival service, Hulu Plus, is not close to these figures for console usage – with 89% of users streaming the content to their computers, compared to just 8% for consoles.

The full breakdown looks something like this and if the numbers don’t seem to quite add up, it’s because survey respondents could choose more than one viewing method to reflect their overall usage.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Netflix plans to expand its service to the UK and Spain in the early stages of 2012.

Thanks, Gamasutra.

Surprising, the PS3 is beating the 360 in it’s home turf & the Wii has the combined Netflix usage.

Netflix will be dead sooner than later. Any hopes of a unified deliverer of all films and TV is a pipe dream now. Every film and TV studio wants to be the one to deliver their ad soaked crap without any middleman to deal with.

@Elf…I 100% Agree..All studios want their own proprietary software for streaming…No way consumers will go for that though!

I will be cutting my service with Netflix to just streaming..since they are doubling my bill if I get DVD’s in the mail..starting Sept.1. Also once my Anime Streaming is caught up, I probably will be cancelling my Netflix all around, since they only seem interested in getting a back catalog of TV shows and not any New Movies at all!
