Sony is predicting a comeback for virtual reality

Sony Vice President Mike Hocking was quoted this week in a video interview as saying that we now have the technology to make virtual reality work, and that it could make a comeback.

This ties into Sony’s recent reveal of an in-progress virtual reality headset at the Consumer Electronics Show 2011 in Las Vegas. There’s no further information yet available about Sony’s HMD (head mounted display) device, but it’s becoming clear that Sony is putting its weight behind the technology.

“Another thing that’s coming back which I’m very excited is the notion of virtual reality,” said Hocking in the video interview.

“So we have our new HMD – or head-mounted display – which was announced at CES earlier this year, and you can see that we can now get back to where we really wanted to get with virtual reality in the ’80s.

“We’ve now got the power to do it, we’ve got the screen resolution to do it, we’ve got the processing power to update fast enough so we can have very immersive experiences on head-mounted displays in gaming in the not too distant future.

“Being in a virtual world where I can see my virtual hands or a virtual gun with all the things we can do in the gaming world is going to be absolutely amazing,” Hocking continued.

Though Sony has been focusing on advancing 3D technology lately, it’s clear they’re already thinking about the next big thing.

If this will come out from Sony i can call this a REAL innovation, not some motion controller piece of crap like Kinect, Wii mote or PS Move.

So you think they’re trying to do VR without motion control? Okay then!

The only difference between this and what’s already out there is the sensory depravation of the visor.

Although it certainly would be nice to see either Microsoft or Sony make some daring moves with their next consoles.

Now this is something I’d be down with in terms of ‘gimmics’ is way above 3D. However I do see Kaz saying something familiar during the announcment of this product…something about..$599

Reminds me of Neuromancer … I’ll dive from Chiba City fighting Wntermute! :-D

I was hoping VR would make it back. Now that its on the horizon I am getting really pumped for it.

@8, well i will never make that when they comes with PS9 LOL, but it looks like that kid use Holo-deck… VR is basicly the first step of the holo-deck(vision), or the next step of “Move”… later on as the clip of Ert, Holo-deck is the max…., step in the world beyond imagination…. play as ganger in the 30, or be a space-trader in the future, everthing is possible, just download a DLC to the holo-deck and it do the rest….

If PlayStation will comes with that cyclops helmet(3D) and have blue-tooth and build-in speakers, and it’s $200,- smackaroos, i will buy it…
