Report – Microsoft readying free-to-play system on 360

Several sources close to Develop have told the site Microsoft is planning to bring free-to-play gaming to Xbox 360.

According to the sources, Microsoft is discussing possible free-to-play deals with developers, with the business model offering either in-game items or premium upgrades using Microsoft Points.

Microsoft has yet to respond to the sources’ claims.

Last week, Valve released free-to-play games on Steam, and announced this morning Team Fortress 2 had gone free-to-play as well.

Wonder how long it will take for MS to come up with something like CoD Elite or Battlefield Free to play? Like a Halo with free maps/upgrades with each subscription, or the same content could be purchased with MS Points.

If there is a way to monitize it MS will sniff it out.

@5, you get a core or basic game for “free” it can be any sort of game but most commonly we’re talking MMO’s, free users can play the game but will be very limited in things like customisation or abilities and weapons and armour and crap like that, if you want anything above and beyond what’s offered free you pay for them in what is called “micro transactions”.

These micro transactions aren’t always so micro though. In BF Play4free they use an in-game currency that you have to pay for in batches, and of course the bigger a batch you buy the better the “value”, so people who are heavily invested in the game can end up paying more than the game is probably worth.

Would it really be F2P though? Cause you would still have to have a Gold account to play them, lol

I think we all know that “free” to MS means ‘If you have a gold account’. So yeah, not really free.

Yeah…well why would they not make a gold sub required? Most people already have a gold account because unlike the dopes at Sony they made it the norm to pay for an XBL sub from the start and I bet you Sony is wishing they did the same thing because they have to offer all this extra crap to Plus members only but then eventually make most of it available to non-Plus members at a later date so they don’t alienate them and feel the backlash…

@4 you can hardly call Home a game (and even if you did its technically still in Beta)
