Rumour – PopCap to be acquired for $1 billion by EA

Thursday, 23rd June 2011 09:40 GMT By Staff

Rumours suggest casual games king PopCap may be about to be taken over by EA, despite a new employee saying it’s just sound and fury.

Techcrunch is citing multiple sources on the subject of the publisher’s acquisition, nominating $1 billion as the asking price.

Jennifer Kye, who claims to be a new employee of PopCap’s beginning next week, has said on Twitter that the rumour is false, and that she was told so by her boss.

TC has since followed up with a new story, however, saying that its entered into “late stage acquisition discussions” with EA. Its quoting the earlier $1 billion as the pricetag.

PopCap does not comment on rumour and speculation, is the official word.

The company was also rumoured to be considering going public earlier this year, and raised $22.5 million in late 2009.

PopCap is said to bring in $100-150 million in revenue each year. It’s best-known games include Plants vs Zombies, Bejewelled, and Peggle.

    I hope it’s fake. I don’t want to live on the planet where are 3-4 publishers that own everything.

    PopCap does not need anyone. If someone will buy them, good bye creativity.

    Sounds like it will be EA. TC’s gone live with a second piece.

    Let’s hope it’s false but this Jennifer Kye’s word is worth nothing. Come on, a new employee?!? If this rumor was true, she wouldn’t know it, obviously! She’s not even in the company yet!

    IF TRUE – This would not be good for us. EA will most prob end up only putting it on their new crappy download store, Origin. Then eventually release it slowly to iPhone with a high mark up on price.

    Good thing for EA though. Popcap would rake them money in for years, and would be one of a few that could bring people over to try their new store.

    Hope it’s indeed a false rumor. I’m usually a casual game hater but the stuff PopCap has made over the years is ages ahead of other devs in terms of quality. Plus, Peggle rules!

    @8 yeah exactly

    Like the boss is gonna tell a new hire who hasn’t even started yet if acquisition rumors are true…plus he/she probably knew the dopey employee would run to twitter saying what he/she told her and announce it to the world therefore why would he even confirm if an acquisition was occurring when its not public knowledge, and shouldn’t be until the acquisition is finalized…

    And whatever…if getting bought by EA puts more PopCap games on XBLA that’s fine with me…
