Report – Vita to have Skype functionality

It looks as though Skype will be made available on Vita when it releases, just as with the PSP, according to a demonstration of the handheld in Brazil.

Much like the PSP, it will offer Skype functionality despite Microsoft purchasing the service last month.

Microsoft said service contracts with Skype prior to the purchase will be upheld, and that the company will continue to offer the service on non-Microsoft products.

Skype has over 170 million users, and 600,000 new customers register for the product each day.

Thanks, rrw.

Oh snap, Microsoft making that money…definitely was a smart move to honor all contracts and partnerships previously established…can’t restrict your revenue stream

A lot of companies pay for other companies technology. Reason why Microsoft didn’t go with Bluray because it would have made the price point of the system too high for them to be marketable. Just like Microsoft games uses SOny’s DRM company.

Just put the phone functionality in the device for heaven sake and sweep away all “smart phones” why is SONY acting stupidly ?!!

They should have designed VITA with A MOBILE PHONE in mind instead of releasing a gazillion of devices that have a gazillion of competition

@4, It’ll add to the cost of the device, you could simply use VOIP (Skype, among other services) to contact others using the same software. There are reasons that high end phones cost well over $500, mainly greediness & to force us onto contracts but there are other factors.
Now that I’ve actually had a look at Skype… it’s not bad, I just can’t imagine a scenario where I will need to use it.
