Wii U controller won’t be sold separately, confirms Nintendo
Nintendo’s confirmed that the tablet controller for Wii U won’t be sold as a separate device, and will be packaged as one unit with the console.

“Both the controller and the console will be sold as one unit. You won’t be able to buy the controller alone,” a rep told CVG.
Nintendo also said that multiplayer games for the console is being made to use one tablet controller, while other users will need to use a Wiimote.
Nintendo unveiled Wii U for the first time during Nintendo’s press conference last night.

So you can’t have more than one person playing the WiiU with a tablet controller? This doesn’t sound very good.

Thats what the “U” part is doing in the name; Its meant just for ‘You’.
Seriously, i’m not being funny, thats what Nintendo honestly meant.

“you wont be able to buy the controller alone”
I think that may be a little wrong?
surely i could buy another controller to use with a wiiu as a second controller?

Eh? So what if yours gets broken? Controllers get dropped, etc.
This thing gets more bizarre by the minute.

@2 I didn’t watch the conference so I didn’t see that, my mistake. Still would be better with multiple tablets imo.

Not only that, there’s been no mention of using two controllers with one console.
I hate the ambiguity.

There doesn’t seem to be any ambiguity on that – you can only use one. Everyone else has to use Wiimotes.
I’m getting a faint whiff of clusterfuck.

Now I dont even want Wii U, and it includes an AMD graphic?!
Next time industry brings some remote tablet, I will punch them in the face.

Is anything known about the resolution/specs of the tablet/controller?

The only thing I’ve seen is that it’s not HD and it’s not OLED. No specifics.

I have a policy of 2 controllers per console minimum due to if one dies i can go back to the other, thing is this console wont allow that? my interest took a big hit with that

@Blerk no HD? Man, I hoped at least 720p. Whats so cool about having 1080p games on the big screen, than switching to non-HD on the controller? My wife permanently kicks me out of the livingroom claiming the big screen …

It is quite unusual to state that the controller won’t be sold seperatly. There is still a fair bit of time before it comes out so they could change there mind by that time and i have heard that they are looking into the possibility of using 2 controllers in a game. I would bet that by the time it is available you will be able to buy the controllers seperatly.
I also wonder about the wii controllers and whether one (or two, that would be nice) will come with the system as it still looks like they will be needed (i.e. for two or more player games and the golf game showed an interesting way to use the controllers together). Not everyone has a wii and therefore we would have to buy these controllers along with the system, meaning more money to put down.

I understand if only one can be active for each console,
but what about when I smash the tablet playing a waggle game!

The most obvious reason for the ‘one pad, no extras’ thing is because they’re too damned expensive. Wiimotes are pricey enough, can you imagine how much one of these costs?

I was just hoping they wont force me to buy that controller and they wanna bundle it together cuz it might not sell well alone. They will probably also force people to use it by making exclusive games for it and adding features to regular games that can only be accessed using that controller. Make a proper smaller sized dual analog stick controller with say like a 4″ screen or non and i’m sold. No matter how light it is, it will feel huge.

ohhh big fail. Seriously, even though the gadget is receiving a lot of harsh comments, I was convinced it could be a game-changer. But I thought it was going to be sold separately as well, to allow for multiplayer, interact with other Nintendo devices, etc
Nintendo, you could have brought a nice idea to life, don’t make it a big fail by shortening the possibilities…

I don’t thing it is a fail. I’m no fan boy but it is fact that Nintendo has always been implemented new trends.
As the time pass people will get used with the idea of one controller..

@16 +1: been pointing that out since minute one. So one player gets a “great” experience thru that… what about the others?!?
This is going nowhere near good.
Unless they come out with some news/changes or something.
