Xperia Play to launch on April 1 in Europe, new commercial released

Sony Ericsson has released a new trailer in its thumb-transplant series of Xperia Play ads, and confirmed an April 1 European release.

According to Engadget, the Xperia Play will set Spaniards back €649 when it launches next month.

Other European territories are expected to follow suit with release timing, although pricing is likely to vary.

Last week, Sony Ericsson confirmed a March 31 UK release for the smartphone. No official price has been set, but Play.com first listed it for pre-order at £519.99, later dropping to £499.99.

To celebrate the PlayStation Suite-enabled phone, a sequel to the Superbowl commercial has been unveiled, filling in some of the back story.

April Fools Day!

I want one of these but I hope the prices aren’t too steep.

EDIT fool me for not reading the article.. £499 is too much!

@2 That, or they’re playing the “edgy controversy breeds hype for a product in danger of slipping under the radar” game.

@1 This is a rather standard price for a phone which this much power under the hood.

On price plans, expect that price to drop significantly.
