Ridge Racer Unbounded announced for multiplatforms

Friday, 4th February 2011 17:48 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Namco has announced Ridge Racer Unbounded for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

A teaser trailer was released for the game earlier today, and the video shows it’s being developed by BugBear Entertainment.

The trailer shows Reiko parking her car in a seedy alleyway before exiting the car and hopping into another one. With a wink in the rearview mirror, she excellorates out of the alley, barely missing her own car and speeds out into the city streets causing destruction in the process.

When Eurogamer asked Ridge Racer 3D’s director Masamichi Yamazaki about the multiplatform title, he declared his team wasn’t involved with the title but was “aware of what its concept is.”

“All the Ridge Racers have their own concepts and target audiences,” he said. “That is a very different Ridge Racer from this [Ridge Racer 3DS] one. This one is a more rightful successor of the series.”

No exact date for the game other than 2012 was revealed.

BugBear is fantastic, maybe this will be the lift the series has needed for a long time.

exactly, Ridge Racer IS defined by the pumping Japanese Neon Techno, crazy tracks, drifting, Dig Dug car crazyness! This unfortunatly looks to be none of those things… Hope as more is revealed, it starts to at least slightly resemble some of those things! :)

Is it just me or is Unbounded a really clumsy subtitle? They should drop the -ed.

Not wanting to sound pedantic, but shouldn’t that just be “unbound”?

HA! I guess they had one in the oven figuring, hey, this is about the time when new consoles would usually start coming out anyway, might as well release one…lol

i´m not much into racing games….RR i truly love though…it´s just fun. RR 7 was pretty mediocore though -no rumble on the DS3 ruined it for me – also i didn´t like the customization / tuning stuff…i don´t know, for RR i don´t want that stuff. i just want nitro, a lot of cars to choose from and go – simple and slick…but maybe that´s just me.. i really enjoyed 6 and the psp versions…i´ll keep an eye on this one for sure. i just need ONE racing game.

The concept just isn’t Ridge Racer. Bugbear is a fantastic racing game developer, though. Flatout UC was ace.

    I don’t folks.

We can look at the past and see a lot of game franchises that resisted change and faded away.

Of course we can see changes that went bad too.

But today there are a lot of high quality racers out there. And as much as I do enjoy RR, it hasn’t evolved much over the past few years.

I know, some will say that is a good thing. But I don’t agree.

A FPS is an FPS, but compare Doom or even Quake to what we have CoD/Halo/BFBC. All of them still fps games. All of them feature OMP gameplay.

But the new ones are so much more fully featured the old ones seem flat(even if they had a new coat of HD paint). Without substantail change DOOM/Quake wouldn’t be able to compete.

    Racers are like that.

RR needs more then neon glows and drifting to sell.

RR7, imo, was a fantastic step forward. But a lot more could be done.

the danger(and it is with FPS games too) is that at some point when we start adding this or that feature to each game in the same genere and thos features become basic and standard, we create games that feel almost exactly like each other.

I know some folks will claim different, but there is little difference to an onlooker between MoH/CoD/BF, and even less between one version of the same frnachise and another(CoD MW vs CoDMW2 for example). There are offering very similar experiences.

Racer are really bad at this at this point. A BMW is a BMW is a BMW. All games are going render the real race tracks nearly perfectly. It is hard to set one game apart from another. Forza and GT feel and look like the same game.

Long story shortend, is that bringing in BB to add some flavor to RR, imo, is a great idea. They have a proven track record when it comes to arcade racers. They know what they are doing. So long as they have enough freedom to be creative with RR, I bet it works out well.
