Kinect worldwide sales at 8 million after only 60 days [Updated]

kinect

Speaking during Microsoft’s CES 2011 keynote, Steve Ballmer started off strong with some good old-fashioned number-centric chest-thumping.

Specifically, he announced that Kinect’s already moved 8 million units worldwide. Yowza.

For comparison’s sake, the all-seeing camera was only at 2.5 million in November. Looks like Microsoft had quite the merry Christmas.

Ballmer did not, however, specify whether he was referring to units sold to customers or shipped to retail. We’ll mail Microsoft for clarification.

Update: Microsoft informed Bloomberg reporter Dina Bass that the numbers do, in fact, pertain to retail shipments. However, Microsoft also added that it’s “far surpassed” 5 million sold, but wouldn’t elaborate any further.

6 months? It’s only been out for just over 2 months!

60 days…

I think I predicted something like 3m by the end of 2010. lol

Probably shipped, and I wonder if they count their giveaways as well

8 million.

This is impossible because:

1) Worldwide 44.6 million Xboxes sold (a lot of broken from them)
2) This is Steeve Balmer at it’s best.

Thats probably shipped. It’s just unreal to do so much in 2 months. Even their Halo does less.

T-minus 5 minutes until another Sony “shipped” update…

Yeah, Next sony numbers: 10 million and etc…

Really that does not help something.

Edit: Fixed the 60 days thing. Sorry about that, everyone!

I wonder how many kinect software titles (excluding Adventures) have sold. That’s the real crux.

A fair bit I’d wager. There are currently 6 different Kinect titles in the UK top 40, with one higher than GT5.

@9, impressive on the surface, but irrelevant without some relative numbers.

Number clarification is out, 8m shipped, and they say “far surpassed” their 5m goal (which was originally shipped anyway… but meh).

Edit – Now IGN are saying differently. Original clarification was from bloomberg twitter (dinabass).

@10: Sadly that’s impossible now that ELSPA have stopped doing sales awards. If we’re lucky we might see Famitsu providing UK figures again this month (for December). Possibly either Kinect Sports or Dance Central might show up in the NPD top 10 too (next week I believe).

Howbloodymany?! I’m going to give up predicting stuff. Unless they pay me as much as Pachter.

Wow!

Although its hardly surprising. Forumites snubbed it pretty bad but in the real world Kinect had a lot of people excited, and word of mouth has been nothing but positive.

The constant influx of PC application for Kinect has done it great press too, and undoubtedbly pushed sales.

It still seems to be gathering momentum as well, evidenced by the continued rise of Kinect games in sales charts.

That 5 million sold figure actually ties in with the VGChartz guesstimates – heh they gotta be accidentally right sometimes eh? The 8 million shipped also seems to tally well with the good availability in stores too. Well done them for getting so many manufactured and ready.

I’ve still not actually had a go on one.

and the majority of those are being used for other than gaming lol. Either way that’s too many cameras M$ has to spy on you. I feel sorry the idiots who don’t read user agreements.

^ What is this? your new year resolution to post more this year? Did you get laid off or something? Why the sudden uprise of post lately? Did you play that river rafting game in Natal Sports?

(those are all serious questions btw)

So if this is. Shipped then what is the actual pushed product? I know they pretty much sold these to the stores but how. Many have the stores sold?

Yeah, the only real indicator we’ll get is from NPD numbers. 8 mill shipped means sweet FA.

Anyone want to wager weather or not there will be any good Kinect games using Skeletal tracking? I am lead to believe that the better scoring kinect games mainly track the silhouette, which the PSeye would actually do better with it’s higher resolution & frame rate.

“Shipped then what is the actual pushed product?”

All we know is > 5m. We wont get any better than that from this point on. If they announce 10m at some point we’ll know that they probably sold most of the 8m, and so on and so on. It’s how this stuff works.

But we probably wont here anything now outside of the usual quarterly reports.

I’m waiting for the FW update that apparently can double Kinect’s readable res.

Played with Kinect for a few hours last week. Not perfect, but very good – and fun, too. Shows up the Wii for what some of us always knew it to be: that is, a toy with a flawed input device (apologies to Wii lovers). And that is an impressive sales figure regardless of one’s personal views of the efficacy and utility of the technology.

Now let’s see some killer software.

What most of the dopes up top fail to understand is that its pretty easy to sell over 5 million (8 million shipped) when parents are popping out kids everyday, and those kids are buying kinect, so it doesn’t matter what we think, it’s easy to understand that plenty of kids asked for this for xmas and whatever which can easily reach those numbers…not to mention I have friends that are casual gamers if that who went out and bought x boxes just for kinect, which I decided to pass on myself but it still has much more selling power than WiiHD…oops I meant Playstation Move…
