Capcom discusses Dino Crisis and Onimusha, but no revivals without “incredible” idea

dinocrisis

Here’s hoping they’ve long since fired the guy who suggested it’d be “incredible” to put dinosaurs in space.

Speaking with IGN, Capcom VP of strategic planning and business development Christian Svensson explained that while its old guard of time-traveling samurai and occasionally space-faring dinosaurs may be down, they’re certainly not out.

“For the time being I think it’s in percolate mode, that is to say, it’s not forgotten internally, there are discussions that go on, but I don’t think anyone has sort has come up with the ‘that’s it’ idea of how to get the game back up to 3 or 4 million units,” he said of Onimusha.

“While Onimusha 1 and Onimusha 2 are among our more successful titles, Onimusha 3 and Onimusha Dawn of Dreams, not so much,” he explained.

He also noted that Onimusha’s deep roots in Japanese culture make it a tough sell for audiences outside the land of the rising sun. Our solution? Tom Cruise. Onimusha’s no stranger to guest stars, and we want to stab Tom Cruise in the stomach. Wait, what about a last samurai? Nope. Never heard of it. Anyway, about cutting Tom Cruise to ribbons…

Svensson was similarly blunt about Dino Crisis, explaining that the series’ focus on tank controls and pre-rendered backgrounds has turned it into – fittingly enough – a dinosaur compared to more modern fare.

“There are discussions, Dino Crisis comes up from time to time, but there isn’t any burning desire from R&D or the business side to light that franchise back up again,” he added. “Until there’s an internal champion with something incredible, things just sort of sit there.”

One word: crossover. Three more words: samurai dinosaur jousting. You can send us the check whenever you’d like, Capcom.

I REALLY want a Dino Crisis reboot, make it happen Capcom! Keep it as a survival horror with multiple puzzles & several side-missions & dozens of different species, just don’t go too bizarre, NO dinos in space! maybe a sub-urban citywith a nearby jungle like area with some labratories which somehow spawned these dinos, just make the main missions generally closed in & side missions in open spaces, like rescuing civilians or something.

Personally I’d rather they came up with some new ideas and left both of those series where they are.

Loved Onimusha 1+2 but thought the introduction of time travel into the 3rd completely ruined the series for me.

All the way through I just had this “this ain’t right” feeling.

Also, what was with putting Jean Reno in the game? If they were going to do a dual character story they should’ve brought Samonosuke and Jubei together. That would have made for a much more interesting story, and kept the game in Japan.

As for Dino Crisis, I don’t miss it as much. It’d need a fairly major overhaul to be competitive today. People like to be able to move and shoot at the same time these days.

the first two Onimusha titles were ridiculously repetitive and dull crap. with more puzzles and larger levels to explore instead of the dreadful combat and countless enemies they had those game could’ve been allright. I also couldn’t understand why did they choose to go with the 2d scenery on PS2.. haven’t played the third game.

DC was one of their best games back in the days though, alongside RE 3 & 2, but I don’t know if Capcom are up to the task of properly rebooting it today.

i want a resident evil 1-3 collection for ps3, with slightly upgraged graphics, without the blockiness. Better yet a dino cryis remake and a resi game (alongside resi 6) going back to its old roots using the haunting music on par with resi 1( not the dual shock version with lame happy music).

You might also want to request a control scheme that doesn’t suck donkey balls while you’re at it.

For a Dino Crisis reboot, just make it like Resi 4 (Not 5, that was shit). Give a bigger focus on survival horror, have epic chase scenes with T-rex’s, actual puzzles and a wide area which we need to explore which opens up more and more as we progress through the story. I suspect a good Dinosaur game with the current generation graphics would sell quite nicely.

There, Job Done.
