Medal of Honor reviews are go, Eurogamer gives 8/10

Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:20 GMT By Patrick Garratt

The global Medal of Honor review embargo has now lifted, following plenty of sites going live with scores this morning.

Everything so far’s listed below. Eurogamer’s given the shooter an 8/10, with CVG publishing Games Master’s 85 percent review yesterday.

Some reviews have only scored the single-player portion and not multiplayer, even though online servers went live for reviewers last week, according to Videogamer’s Martin Gaston.

As ever, if you have a score, stick it in the comments and we’ll add it to the list.

The game releases in the US today and on Friday in Europe. You can watch the launch trailer here.

What’s the score on that video? Is there one?

    #3 4 years ago
  4. Predator2k9

Nope, there are no servers for multiplayer online yet, so they’ve decided to review the SP part and wait for the full multiplayer component… sounds like a score between 70 and 75. Btw. campaign only lasts around six hours. :-/

Some pro’s and cons of Looki’s video review

    - campaign rich in variety
    - nice CG cutscenes
    - decent production
    - proper gunplay
    - mainly respectable graphics
    - awesome sound effects and score

    - short singleplayer campaign (around 6 hours)
    - ending is disappointing
    - huge load of scripts, some bugs
    - very linear
    - almost no replayability
    - tactical moments doesn’t really exist
    - exaggerated patriotism isn’t bearable
    - AI with some problems

Isn’t it ‘rather silly’ to be reviewing a game such as this without taking the multiplayer component into account? What next, reviewing the demo because “the full game’s not out until next month”?

    #12 4 years ago
  13. M2Kx

@12: They said they will review the MP separately as soon as the servers are online. But yeah you’re right I prefer complete reviews too.

    #13 4 years ago
  14. Predator2k9

Yeah, right… give credit to all other reviews who haven’t even played the FULL multiplayer component… *facepalm*
It’s more honest to provide thoughts of the campaign and WAIT before putting a critic of the multiplayer part online.

All the other reviews refer to the closed and open beta sessions. That’s “rather silly” ;)

    #14 4 years ago
  15. Blerk

I wasn’t giving credit to *any* of the reviews – it’s obvious that none of this batch of reviews have played the final multiplayer component.

It was the same with the Halo Reach reviews, if you remember. Only Edge held out to play the full thing (and they don’t usually bother doing that either). Something is a bit broken in review-o-land, and seems to be getting more broken by the year.

77% from an Xbox Fanzine? Really?

I thought those guys weren’t allowed to hand out anything below a 9. Or maybe they didn’t get EAs check in the mail.

I would’ve thought it would be scoring higher than that, to be honest. The trailers looked amazing.

So much for the CoD-killer I guess. Buy a few more FPS studios Ricitiello, quantity is always the answer.

  26. Kuwabara

id like an epic single player experience ffs. i guess ill have to wait for brothers in arms. Won’t be gettin this. I guess they havn’t stuck with the roots of the series, im pretty sure past MOH games were longer than 6 hrs!

    #26 4 years ago
  27. Blerk

@25, I wouldn’t go so far as to call it ‘bias’, but in general I wouldn’t argue with that opinion. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with Black Ops.

  29. DSB

    @23 Chuckle chuckle :P

What’s interesting is that people write things that differ so immensely.

RPS is on about being a spectator, whereas Eurogamer lauds the intense combat experience. So which is it? Are you on the sideline or are you in the thick of it?

I think there’s a lot of good stuff there, though. I was annoyed by the lack of a lean function in the MW2 singeplayer (I think leaning in multiplayer would take away from the action) but Danger Close seem to be on top of that.

Kinda scary how much the menus look like MW2 though, judging from the RPS screenshot.

    @31 Really? I guess I haven’t really kept count.

If that’s the case, they need a serious online contingent. I haven’t seen the final Medal of Honor, but 3 static classes and a levelling system that appears picked out of Bad Company 2 seems a little scarce to me. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Once Bad Company 2 had been fully unlocked I didn’t see any point in playing on – Just for a platinum star on my rifle? Fuck that shit.

  36. OlderGamer

It wouldn’t matter if the game was handed a 9+/10. Not enough gamers will put down CoD, BFBC2, or Halo to make this game stick around.

If someone wanted to make a play for the a piece of the Online Shooter crown, I would suggest dropping the MRSP by 20%, and advertise your putting out DLC for FREE.

Otherwise why would most people want to invest in this game, when they are perfectly happy with the ones they already have that do the same thing.

Over crowded and over priced, DLC heavy, marketplace already. Good luck MoH, you’ll need it.

    #36 4 years ago
  37. Erthazus

DSB is surprised that it has 6 hour campaign, where MW2 his favourite piece of… had only 4-5 at best. Every blockbuster FPS have campaign of 4-6 hours. Uncharted 2 with it’s 10 hours is just an exception.

But to be serious, i’m not sure if MOH 6 hours. I think i can do it much faster. The AI in this game is such a waste. AI of your team and enemy AI are just bullshit. I finished like 3 missions and never died once. So easy.

You’re criticising DSB’s posts when there’s there not even anything to criticise. You’re arguing with him just because it’s him saying it. It is seriously tiresome and it’s ruining perfectly decent threads.

    #40 4 years ago
  41. DSB

    Feelin’ the love.

I really dislike the new Kotaku review template, I liked the whole “pros” and “cons” thing they had going before. The new one is way too rigid.

@37 Given that Medal of Honor hasn’t been defined as being either a multiplayer or a singleplayer game, and the fact that the lead studio only had to worry about creating the singleplayer, I’m surprised that they seem to be following the template of more dedicated multiplayer shooters, like Bad Company 2 or Modern Warfare 2.

Hence the “It’s only 6 hours?” – That’s taken one AAA studio two years to do. Six hours of content.

    #41 4 years ago
  42. YoungZer0

@8: Yes, we get it, you played a BETA and think that it was broken. I don’t agree. If it was it was probably fixed by now, if not, DICE will release some patches. So there is no problem.

So you rushed through the game, and missed every interesting thing on your way. This is not Modern Warfare 2. You should take your time to get into full immersion.

I wonder how Hyperactive children like you could even get passed the first hour of Bioshock.

watching the ign and gt reviews it seems pretty crap

altho: GT gave it 8.1 when all they did was bash it WTF!!! THIS is why i dont trust reviewers half the time!! >: (

also altho another topic entirely i guess you could argue that some of these complaints could be given to CoD aswell but on the whole your average CoD game sounds better than this so whatever

@76: It was directed towards Erthazus. So there i no problem.

@youngZero “So you rushed through the game, and missed every interesting thing on your way.”

You obviously know how i played. If you do than give here a prove video of that in the next 24 hours or fuck off with your thoughts somewhere else.

“I wonder how Hyperactive children like you could even get passed the first hour of Bioshock.”

Woop di Doop, shit hit the fan and you are wrong again. I enjoyed Bioshock 1 a lot, especially it’s setting, atmosphere and story.

and i’m a big fan of Metal Gear Solid or especially STALKER (Stalker is a good example), but you don’t know what it is, so… don’t even fuck with me when you will talk something about immersion, setting and story.

    @82 LOL o i see.

Still, try not to be mean to the poor kid. I just think he has problems with conveying what he actually means in English. Obviously he has problems with english (i think he learned english on his own)

Erthazus. You too dude. Relax man, it might do you some good lol.

    #84 4 years ago
  85. Erthazus

@84 Hey, can you shut up please? When i was rude to you?
And i don’t have problems conveying what i say in english. Get out of here kid to the threads where you argue about “which platform” have more exclusives. Fool.

    #85 4 years ago
  86. spiderLAW

Read this carefully okay, dont rush through this or you’ll miss it. Ready?
I was sticking up for you. I was helping you out. you are rude to everyone with your vulgar language and bad grammar which both clearly show that you have problems conveying your feelings or what exactly it is you are trying to say. I never take them as offensive or rude personaly because i know that it is hard for you to carry out a conversation in english without using profanity between every word. When i said relax I meant for you not to comment back in any agressive manner on comments that are clearly meant for attacking you to get a rise out of you. Again, relax, take a deep breath, stay away from the energy drinks for a day and enjoy the articles that are posted here.
As for you trying to attack me personally with the “Get out of here kid to the threads where you argue about “which platform” have more exclusives. Fool.” comment, ill just ignore that one because i know damn well i dont ever choose sides on platforms unlike you Mr. PC is teh best EVAR!!! I’ll gladly enjoy all my consoles from th 80s till now while you waste time arguing with your ‘friends’ over who has the better motherboard.

@spiderLAW, i’m not angry to anyone and i’m not starting these holywars. If someone saying that i’m shit than i’m doing the same.
    I have opinion. Everybody has.
And yes my grammar and english are bad, but it’s not because of i’m stupid or MAD or kid or something, it’s because it’s not my native language at all. Where i live no one speaks english. I learn it everyday. I’m trying, but you don’t need to tell me about english and insult me. It’s obvious that i’m bad at it. You don’t even need to mention about it. I get it, i know it. Thanks.

PC is not teh best evar, if it was TEH best EVAR i could enjoy platform exclusives like it was before. Everyone understand that PC as a platform is weak right now, although mouse, great graphics, great MMO’s, cheaper games, better servicesm true HD are always with me. When i say in certain threads that “PC FTW!” than it is indeed better suitable for PC experience in my opinion/Experience or whatever. It’s not a “BDH fanboyism” here.

“arguing with your ‘friends’ over who has the better motherboard.”

i never argue about that. No one from my friends give a damn about PC hardware at all :D except one guy that asks me about “Future upgrades”.

I thought you are a good guy like OG and some other folks, but in the last few days you are trying to say that i’m a kid or whatever. Your choice and i ignored that for a while, now i don’t care.

@83: Lol, I’m a huge MGS Fan, hell i even got an autograph from Hideo and Shinkawa and I’m also a huge Stalker fan. So i don’t understand how you can miss the immersion. The atmosphere of the game is fantastic.

However. You were right about the 4+ hours. I played it for 2 hours when i wrote my comment. There was no end in sight, so i figured that others would’ve had rushed through it. Needless to say that i didn’t see the end coming. There was no real story to tell at all. Some minor subplot with a general who fucks up shit.

I could never figure out who’s is who in the game. Most of the Army soldiers have a brickface, with no personality at all.

The only one who stood out was … that one guy with his FDNY Cap. But i don’t remember his name. Something with D?

Anyway, while the experience was fantastic, it was too short. And this is it’s biggest problem. There there no camaraderie moments in the game. Something that would help us getting to know these guys. They should have made some cutscenes, tell the whole thing from your characters perspective. A real narrative. Like Brothers in Arms. That’s what i was expecting. But that never happened. I don’t know jackshit about my team. The only thing i know about anyone is rabbit. He likes music from Hindu Kush. And that he got 5 kids, which is why they call him rabbit. But that was mentioned by the developers and nowhere else. And this is why SPOILER his death wasn’t tragic at all /SPOILER.

What i really like is that the talk in complete military style. With this, they show exactly who it is they want to approach: Soldiers.

Also: After playing through the story, the name “OpFor” makes more sense.
