Kamiya hits out at DMC’s new Dante

Friday, 17th September 2010 16:41 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Hideki Kamiya is a bit pissed about the new Devil May Cry and the remodelled Dante. Even more so than the internet. And you know the internet: it gets mental.

Kamiya, the creator of the series at Capcom, hit out at DMC following its reveal at TGS this week.

When asked about the Ninja Theory-led reboot, Kamiya basically replied, “Whatever,” in a tweet in English.

One user then said he missed the old Dante, and Kamiya said, “I miss him, too.”

“I’ve been sad since Dante left me,” he later replied.

Capcom announced DMC at its TGS showcase this week, showing a revamped, younger Dante.

No date yet, but it will release on PS3 and 360.

Kamiya left the Devil May Cry series to develop Bayonetta at Platinum.

Thanks, SCRAWL.

Did Kamiya leave, or was he kicked out of the company? If he left by choice, he has no say in the matter whatsoever.

By the sound of it though, I don’t think he has any problem with the new design, just that he doesn’t want to think about Capcom. There’s probably a fair bit of bad blood there.

“Kamiya left the Devil May Cry series to develop Bayonetta at Platinum.”.

He shouldn’t be pissed; he’s clearly gone on to bigger and better things.

He did baynetta that killed Devil May Cry franchise anyway.

  4. Michael O’Connor

@2 and 3 Also, what these guys said. He ended making an even better game than Devil May Cry in the process anyway.

    Wow he’s totally pissed …

    Johnny you’re such a liar.

I would disagree. Bayonetta is or was crapola and I can’t judge on the new Dante or the game. Ninja Theory may actually make the series that much better.

@3: Exactly. It’s understandable however that he’s upset when people create a shitty game with shitty gay main character and call it a successor to HIS game.

@5 I’ll go and hand in my resignation, then. :(

@6 I thought Bayonetta was a breath of fresh air compared to Devil May Cry 4, which, quite frankly, was probably when the panic alarm was set off.

It’s brilliant to see they’re rebooting the series, although I’m not a big fan of the whole Dante redesign. I think that went a bit too far.

That said, other then that, I loved Devil May Cry 3 and Devil May Cry 2 was, in my book, alright. If anyone can set it straight, it has to be Ninja Theory.

They don’t need to refresh the main character, in this case Dante, just everything else.

  9. AHA-Lambda

@1 – how should he have no say over a character he created? O_o

plus i think he’s pissed, quite refreshing to see someone inthe industry not in “PR mode” when they’re clearly disappointed. And why wouldn’t he be its a ****ing awful design.

I think DMC really needed a extreme makeover, but
i’d say he’s just someone claiming to be dante. :)

but yeah… that trailer was way too gay. Even so, looks much better then bayonetta, that game was crap (better than DMC4, true, but still oldschool)

I just don’t understand those robots.
Robots are the most stupid thing u can find in any game.
they are not fun, they don’t bleed, and they have no personality. FAIL.

i’d say he looks like lady from dmc4…

“I think DMC really needed a extreme makeover, but
i’d say he’s just someone claiming to be dante. ”

I would agree. I think this guy is either confused or claiming he is Dante.

“I just don’t understand those robots.
Robots are the most stupid thing u can find in any game.
they are not fun, they don’t bleed, and they have no personality. ”

Watch the trailer again, you would see that they have a living thing in them, maybe a demon? Not sure but these robots are more less cyborgs, with living and robotics working together.

@8 Thankyou Johnny for being a legend! That was exactly all that was needed. Dante himself didn’t need a redesign, he was awesome, just the gameplay itself needed to change.

devil may cry “1″ is still the best of the bunch by far!! and the character model in the first game was the most bad ass/ slickest character in gaming history. once they changed him the series went downhill.

Bayonetta set a new standard for action games anyway, hence I suppose the fans of previous Dmc entries should just move on and play his titles now.

Devil May Cry was a great, great series of games (except for the second one, which you have because you don’t want to jump from 1 to 3 or bought the collection). Everything was great about this games and it would be awful to see things distorted and destroyed because a younger and western studio is trying to make things better and because of the head of the project trying to sell more. Ok, maybe they need it, but not everyone will like it and I think it was a more precise and safer shot to continue the series where it was left. DMC4 was a BLAST, beautifully done and by far the best Devil May Cry game to the date. If this one screws the series…we will have other franchise that died in the number of death (4) because Japanese people handed the series to western hands. I’m praying this does not happen and if it does, at least we have a DEVIL MAY CRY 5 from Japanese Capcom hands that features, as I said before, coop, Dante, Nero, the girls, the world we are used to, the music we are used to… THERE IS NO NEED FOR REINVENTION WHEN THINGS ARE JUST PERFECT. Silent Hill didn’t need it, Devil May Cry didn’t need it (maybe a little in the camera and other tiny thing more technical than artistical)… Resident Evil needed it and the results were two fantastic, fun, immersive and hell of replayable games. I’m going to eat now.

He didn’t just leave Capcom; he was FORCED to leave by Capcom’s insipid management, along with Clover Studio, the great people who made Okami and the nexus of which was to form Platinum.

i dont understand the love for Bayonetta. Mediocre game really. Must be Europe thing.
Action was crazy LOOKING but was mediocre to play. I played in on 360 when it launched and wasnt impressed.

  21. Phoenixblight

    “Silent Hill didn’t need it”

Actually the series needed it because majority of th team has moved on to different things. Konami has to find a new way to deliver the series and giving it to Western studios was just a test which obviously didn’t deliver. Hoping that the new one that was shown at E3 will do so.

@20 to each their own, but let me say this: it *plays* as good as you’re at it ;) although the concept truly isn’t for everyone.

I hope that ninja theory has the courage to stick with the new design and not listen to all the internet spazzing. itsa fucking reboot! old dante was a tool. old dante is dead and good riddance to that white haired cracka ass fag! long live emo dante!

I think they should just let the series die and move on.

    @ DaMan
O no dude, i get you. I understand completely but i just dont understand the taste for it by anyone is all. But again, too each his own.
I played it like any other game i play, better than most hard core gamers (games r natural too me. been playing them for 23yrs). I just didnt see the greatness that you guys have mentioned. Wasnt a bad game, just wasnt great to me. Id play part 2, just not untill its around $30.

    #26 4 years ago
  27. DaMan

@26 well, if I understand your comment correctly, you don’t see what’s so great about it’s gameplay being centered on fighting alone? see, sort of asking what makes Super Mario Galaxy so fun, or what’s so great about a deathmatch in a multiplayer fps..purely a matter of taste then I suppose.

  28. spiderLAW

Yeah. Its like, how can anybody like the awful demo of Quantum Theory? I dont understand it, but there are those who liked it.

True courage would have been trying to do another great game in the serie with its atmosphere and hero intact .

Throwing everything away , rebooting and using the name of an ip as a joyride to sales and stardom is rather easy and cowardly .

@24 Shut up dude. That was the dumbest comment today for sure.

I enjoyed Bayonetta on a gameplay and challenge level, but almost everything else about the game either annoyed me hideously or I felt was just plain bad.

The characters were god awful. Every single one of them were either irritating in personality (in exaggerated or stereotypical ways) or badly voiced to the point that I just wanted them to disappear and never come back.

The style of the enemies was too close to DMC4 and the bird-like angels in armour didn’t work particularly well in that either.

The worst character was probably Bayonetta herself, it was like they tried to channel in the over-cocky super ego Dante had in the original Devil May Cry, but what was cool for Dante doesn’t work for Bayonetta, she talks way too much.

Then there was the music. Whooping demons to jazz tunes disco’d up. Scuse me while I puke.

  34. DaMan

heh, loved everything you mentioned. can totally see some being irritated by these things however.

Baldier’s voice actor was in fact bad though.

@34 – balder was SOOOOOOO bad it was amazing :D

  36. LordCancer

@29 its atmosphere and hero were old and boring and so not cool. why should the team be stuck doing that? they might as well make dantes horse adventure cause that be more exciting then another old dante game.

this kamiya guy has little room to talk considering bayonetta. all he does is make one lame ass character after the next. whatever… truly.

I like the new dante and I don’t want you internet twerps ruining it for me.

@30 take old dantes demon cock out of your mouth and say that again. oh noes you smudged your lip stick. go clean your self off your dripping.

    #36 4 years ago
  37. Neolucifer

@36 Dude that’s only your opinion . The franchise survived very well with 4 successful game of various degrée of quality . And that so “uncool and boring hero” was one of the things people cheered loudly about when Marvel Vs capcom 3 appeared … so he must be doing something right .

Do you even listen to yourself ? No one is ruining anything for you , it’s some new game crapping on a franchise with multiple games and guest appearances in other games … if you can’t stand the complains of older fans , then get a better internet filter .

my bad if I ruined your love affair with holoman… but, old dante was about as edgy as a tooth fairy and sadly i mean Dwayne the rock Johnson in that movie tooth fairy.
