Microsoft apparently confirmed at its X10 event in Toronto phone-to-console gaming functionality for its new mobile OS, Windows Phone 7.

According to WMPoweruser, phones using the operating system will one day use phone-to-phone multiplayer functionality, but not at first: out of the gate the phones will only be able to function in a turn-by-turn sense.

“So initially we’re turn by turn-based,” a Microsoft representative told the site. “We are working on real-time phone-to-console, likely initially through Wi-Fi — again, operator networks are sensitive to that. That’s not on day one; day one will be turn-by-turn as well as companion-type gaming where you play a level on the phone and it may unlock a level or a weapon or some special achievement on the console game.

“But, uh yeah — absolutely working on phone-to-console real-time. That is something we’re working on and expect to have in the near future.”

The video interview is posted below, and in it, the rep also slips in details on gameplay between PC and mobile “using the Xbox Live infrastructure”.

Start watching around the 10:30 mark for the goodies.

Here’s hoping Microsoft stick at it with WinMo 7.

Zune HD sounded awesome, so I imported one only to have MS drop nearly all support for it a couple of months later.

The same goes with WinMo 6.5, I bought an HD2 hoping that MS and HTC would be able to sort out interface stuff together, but that hasn’t happened (bar the window dressing).
