PS3 outsold 360 by 28% in last 12 months

ps3slim6

PlayStation 3 outsold Xbox 360 by 4 million units in the 12 months ending June 30, by far the most significant lead Sony has placed over Microsoft since it launched PS3 in 2006.

Microsoft reported last week that it had sold 10.3 million consoles in its last financial year, which ended June 30. Sony confirmed yesterday that it sold 14.3 million PlayStation 3s in the same period, pushing the machine’s total sales to 38.1 million; the gap between the two consoles now stands at a slender 3.6 million units.

Sony boosted PS3 sales over the 2009 Christmas period with the introduction of Slim and a general price cut.

The figures mark a significant reversal in fortunes for the two consoles: in the preceding 12 months, 360 beat out PS3 by 11.1 million to 9.6 million units.

All of which again raises the question of when, and indeed if, PS3 sales are going to pass 360′s. You can bet your ass it’s a question that’s being asked an awful lot at Sony and Microsoft right now.

Despite the major boost to PS3 sales in the past 12 months, and the fact Sony’s figures are undeniably trending towards a overall win, the outcome isn’t as cut and dry as some might like.

Check this out. Hit it for a bigger version:

globalsales_insert

These are cumulative, life-time sales in millions of units. The periods you should be looking at are the Christmas “steps” at points 5, 9, 13 and 17. As you can see, those gaps are shrinking, the most significant closure coming after last Christmas, during which Sony dropped PS3′s price and introduced a new casing. Since Christmas last year, PS3′s growth is obviously steeper than 360′s.

But.

You shall not pass

Microsoft is now attempting to play the same hand against Sony with the introduction of 360 Slim, which by all accounts has been hugely successful.

Week-over-week UK 360 sales rose over 1,000 percent after Slim’s launch, according to Xbox Europe boss Chris Lewis. Analyst Michael Pachter said that Slim accounted for around 40 percent of June 360 sales in the US; 360 moved over 450,000 units in America last month, meaning the console was second only to DS in the period.

If price-cutting and the introduction of a new form factor steepened PS3′s growth, it’s reasonable to assume the same thing will work for Microsoft. Evidence so far suggests this is the case.

And that means the two lines in that graph may go back to near-parallel instead of converging in the next 3-4 quarters. And that means we may not get to write the headline, “PS3 PASSES 360 IN GLOBAL SALES” and spend 72 hours having a massive news wank just yet.

Move any mountain

The answer to the “passing” question is further muddied by the impending releases of Kinect and Move, both of which hit in this year’s Christmas quarter and both of which are likely to further boost sales for their respective mother hardware.

Both Microsoft and Sony have now laid out their motion stalls, [Is that even possible? - Ed] with the last piece of the release jigsaw [Again... - Ed] likely to come with the Kinect release date at gamescom next month.

Kinect is ostensibly expensive at £130 and $150, game included. The peripheral is a single unit, whereas Move can be broken into parts to bring the entry point down. Despite this, though, buying the Motion Controller, Sub Controller and Eye will cost at least £75, coming with a demo disc, as confirmed by Sony yesterday.

Neither offering is “cheap”.

The truth is that no one yet knows how the introduction of Kinect and Move will impact Sony’s ability to pass 360, although the overall reaction to Kinect has been “too much” compared to Move’s “not bad”. We’ll just have to wait until the results come in next spring.

Slappy girl fight

One thing is definitely known, though. Sony and Microsoft are now both locked in a desperate, hair-pulling struggle for the overall lead.

You’re allowed to stand round them in a circle shouting and laughing. You’re only human.

    I approve of your new-found data-analysis-graph-skillset, Patrick. :-)

Sales must be very much up in mainland Europe on what they were. We know sales are well above the 360 in Japan but it’s not selling very many units week to week over there. In the US the 360 still wins out pretty much every month.

So all those extra sales must be coming from Europe, where lovely ChartTrack won’t give us any figures. Last time we got any info the 360 was still outselling the PS3 in the UK but doing much better everywhere else. I imagine that’s still true for our cousins on the continent, but it’d be interesting to see if the UK’s still a 360-lead country or whether Sony’s finally won them over.

I think PS3 will probably win in the end thanks to its 10 year life cycle.

MS will release a new machine within the next few years, while Sony will hold off until the PS3 reaches its 8 year mark at least.

    #2 5 years ago
  3. Blerk

I’m sure the PS3 will take second place before generation end, but I’m not so sure that Sony will let Microsoft get so much of a head start next time out.

They’ll probably keep supporting the PS3 up to the ten-year mark like they did with the PS2, but if MS launch a new machine in 2012 I’d expect a new Sony console in 2013 at the latest. Let’s just hope they learned a few lessons this time out – both of them.

Of course PS3 will eventually overtake 360. Look at the lifetime sales of PS2. If all those people finally make the leap to PS3 then it could sell huge numbers. I guess the price for many of those could be a little bit higher than the sweet spot. But I think we might see a little price cut before Christmas that will bolster sales even more. You can call me Danny Patchter

  5. Blerk

You know, I think pretty much all of those people already bought a console if they wanted one. There’s no huge swathe of people still sitting on the sidelines thinking “I’ll just give it another six months”.

The difference this time around is that Sony lost a huge bunch of the casuals and part-time gamers to the DS and the Wii. Regardless of Sony’s future successes, the PS3 isn’t going to achieve anywhere near the level of sales that the PS2 did.

  6. justiceblob

It just hit me how much this Move vs Kinect thing is really going to change the outcome of this gen. If one is sucessful and one isn’t, the winner will almost certainly take second place.

    #6 5 years ago
  7. Blerk

I can’t really see either of them being particularly successful, tbh. Sony will probably sell a few to the hardcore but not many to the casuals, Microsoft the opposite.

@7 But that’s what people said about the Wii. In the end, I’m just an unrealisticly optimistic person.

    #9 5 years ago
  10. Blerk

I don’t think “Xbot fanboys” have much to be concerned about. Sony’s gone from grinding the competition into the dust last generation to “taking over four years to sell almost as many as the rival they claimed they would crap all over”.

While catching up will be a milestone for them, you can hardly call it a ‘success’. Nintendo, after all, is still running away with it and even discounting them the PS3 will never become this generation’s ‘lead’ machine because there are just too many 360s out there for publishers to ignore.

    #10 5 years ago
  11. StolenGlory

I think both 360 and PS3 ‘fanboys’ should be delighted at this news. With the race being a lot closer than it has been previously, it’ll surely spur both companies on to keep on trying to outdo the other with exclusives, unique content, new titles and other initatives.

Good competition is the best competition right?

I just traded in my 360 for a PS3 like 2 weeks ago and I must say it’s a whole different world. I have a hard time believing I had a 360 this long. Been a Sony guy all my life -.- Oh yeah, I know why. 360 games cost $4 over here while PS3 games are full price. Even by taking that into consideration, PS3 > 360.

  13. Crysis

Xbox fanyboys & even the Sony fans dismiss the Wii calling it a toy, i honestly agree, while the ps3 & 360 are also toys, they are much, much more attractive to the more mature audience, as far as Sony & MS fanboys are concered, it’s a 1v1 fight between the 360 & the PS3, also considering the price of the ps3, would not surprise me if the total spent on purchasing ps3s excelled the total amount of cash spent on the wii

Even if/when Sony “wins,” it really doesn’t matter any more. MS has basically matched PlayStation in 1½ console generations. Sony had the world at its feet, the word “PlayStation” became the generic term for “console” in many households. All of a sudden, a decade on, Sony is behind and everyone’s celebrating its great strides against the competition, which if you’re Sony, must be pretty humbling.

Still, we now have two major players in the HD-gaming sphere and whether or not Sony edges out MS in the end (which, lets face it, they bloody well should do – they really shouldn’t be behind, tbf.) then we, the gamers, are better off for it.

    #19 5 years ago

Nintendo doesn’t really do bankrupt. They’ve never made a loss in a full financial year since they started the company, and have cash reserves like you wouldn’t believe.

Hell, they even managed to stay profitable whilst selling the pup that was the gamecube.

    #20 5 years ago
  21. cookiejar

    Good news indeed.

I’m not sure the 360 slim will have that much of an impact. It may for a couple months, but I stand by what I said the other day that people did want a PS3, but it was simply too expensive at the start and lacked quality titles. Now its cheaper (with maybe another price drop in the future) and the games line up is a lot better, I think many people will finally jump on.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens around the GT5 launch. I think that will be the PS3′s biggest system seller so far.

    #21 5 years ago
  22. Blerk

I was thinking more on the PS3/360 front rather than the ultimate fate of Nintendo. Would the Japanese have taken to the PS3 much earlier or would they have just bought even more DSes? Would the casuals have gone with the cheaper 360 or the more familiar Playstation, or would they have just stuck with their PS2s?

I really must finish my parallel-universe-explore-o-tron machine.

Comparing the life-time sales of the PS2 to the PS3 is silly. Do you know how many units the PS2 had shipped at this point in its lifespan? Almost 100 million. (http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/051130e.pdf)

Congrats to Sony for closing the gap. They have had a good year with some very strong releases, and they deserve the success. But the reality of the matter is that both the PS3 and the 360 are under-performing.

Gamers can ignore the Wii all they want (despite all it’s great games) but it’s the reigning console of this generation, and it will stay that way.

    #29 5 years ago
  30. Tonka

WRT where all the PS2 owners went I suspect they stopped gaming. They grew tired of it. The new generation has other things to do (facebook and fucking each others brains out at Ibiza being the two main contenders) than buy consoles and games.

    The gaming population is shrinking.

    #30 5 years ago
  31. Psychotext

    “The gaming population is shrinking.”

Untrue. Many moved to other devices (handhelds / phones / web). The total numbers seem to up.

    #31 5 years ago
  32. Boris Fett

@30 They all bought different consoles. Some bought the 360, some bought the PS3, and quite a significantly large number bought the Wii.

Sorry gamers, but the Wii exists. Stop pretending it doesn’t. And at at last count, it’s shipped over 72 million units. Most of the highest selling games of this generation are also Wii games.

You put the number of sales between all 3 consoles this generation compared to the last generation, and the figures are indeed up.

Do you know why the PS2 did infinitely better than any of these consoles, to the point where consumers barely paid any attention to any other format? Because it successfully managed to blend both casual and hardcore gaming together.

    #32 5 years ago
  33. The Hindle

4.5bn wow imo, all companies lose money when they launch a product unless your Ninty. Like Boris said Nintendo are the only winners this generation, even if i cant get into the console myself. I think by this gen is out Sony will be a good 10m ahead of the 360.

Im amazed that even though Sony fucked it all up, launched a machine at £525, had no games, online service was crap, Microsoft still possibly couldnt beat them.

    #33 5 years ago
  34. Blerk

Sony struggled through on the power of their brand alone at first. It’s only in the last couple of years where they’ve actually started doing things right again.

Brand is a very powerful thing, and Microsoft’s Xbox brand just couldn’t compete with Sony’s early on. Next generation they’re in a stronger position, but I still think Sony has a significant edge in brand recognition.

    #34 5 years ago
  35. Psychotext

That’s crap TH. Most companies would have gone bankrupt with losses like that.

For comparison, previous product launches cost Sony somewhere in the order of $400m, which was made back within a couple of years. They’ll never make back the money they lost on the PS3, much like Microsoft will never make back the money they lost on the original xbox.

    #35 5 years ago
  36. Boris Fett

@33 Technically Microsoft are beating them.

Not only have they shifted more consoles overall, but the console also has a higher attach rate, and they make a hell of a lot more profit, whereas Sony has consistently been reporting losses up until recently.

    #36 5 years ago
  37. The Hindle

How come they didnt then? PT

Edit Its like some other guy said a few days eariler, Microsoft are making the same mistakes with Kinect like Sony did with the Ps3 in its eariler days, business people these days it makes you wonder how they even get the jobs.

@TH: They took out massive loans and rode the walrus (Sony’s debt stood at over $10bn last year).

I just checked the historical numbers for the PS1 / PS2 launches. When the PS1 launched the division still posted a profit, when the PS2 launched they lost $450m, and the following year immediately covered that by making $630m. The PS3 situation is absolutely nothing like that… it went:

    $1971m loss
    $1080m loss
    $664m loss
    $900m loss

(that last number is iffy as it’s now the NP&D division rather than the gaming division)

i don’t see the wii as a “true” home console since the third party support is atrocious, the only multiplat game to sell over 1mil on it was crapped down version of CoD: WaW, in my personal opinion it cannot replace a 360 or ps3 as a home console, every single multiplat game which makes it to the wii is incredibly cut down & nearly matches the ps2 version, a console made a decade ago.
While the exclusives influences your initial purchase, it’s the multiplatform games which keep u around which the wii is lacking

    #39 5 years ago
  40. The Hindle

Owch based on that id expect the Ps4 to be what the Wii is to the Gamecube same hardware only enhanced basically. Sony cant afford another big jump in hardware again.

I could bet Sony will keep PSN more or less the same & carry it onto the ps4, cept they will do same week releases with full downloadable games which should have already happened, also hope they gave like a 5-10% discount for PS+ members making their subscription service that much more attractive(they may actually use PS+ to make us play online games, they have seen how much MS have proffited off of this)
infact i’d expect (& hope) the ps4 will be the same as the ps3, with certain differences: a more powerful version of the cell processor (would be a waste of time if they made a more pc like processor), much larger memory (shared this time, dedication likely caused a drop in FPS), a much better graphics card (wait for MS to release their’s then make sure your’s looks better) & definately a cheaper entry point is nessecary with a better selection of games @ or near the release date

    @41 Yep.

Its not really the hardware itself that matters anymore. Its the service that runs on it. Xbox Live and PlayStation Network ARE Microsoft and Sony’s bread and butter – or atleast will be in the future.

They will just keep improving each service then bang it onto another piece of hardware every few years. That’s the way its going.

    #42 5 years ago
  43. Blerk

The “Wii method” of designing your hardware is perfectly legitimate, though. PCs don’t get reinvented every few years, they just evolve what they have.

There’s really no reason for either Sony or Microsoft to reinvent the wheel every time out. Take what you have, double (at least) the processor capacity, bung a load more memory in it, slot in the latest version of the graphics chip, throw a bit more hard drive space in, swap out the DVD drive (one of you!) and bob’s your uncle.

@43 No disc drive at all? Pffttt…. i want my discs thank you.
Should be optional i guess. Maybe two different versions of the console. 1 console option having an extra large hard drive and then another option having the disc drive and a smaller hard drive so that people get to choose disc or digital distribution as there main source of gaming. I’ll choose the disc and hard drive. I am not of fan of Digital content shit, its easier for the companies to rip you off that way.

Ok I read the comments and I just want to touch on this Wii being in 1st place bullshit! The wii is not a next gen console. It cannot compete with the XBOX 360 or the PS3 when it comes to all out tech power. A next gen console is all about pushing graphics and psychics to new and higher level and Wii cannot do that period on 360 or PS3! That alone does not make it next gen or in this imaginary dumb race.

If the PS3 and 360 launched day 1 together at $599 and $399 the PS3 would be in the lead today in spite of it being higher cost than the 360. You know and I know. Don’t try to sugar coat it. And the only reason why SONY waited as long as they did was because they felt the one year head by M$ wasn’t a threat and that no one would cling to the wii because of the visuals….YES they were wrong and got their ass SPANKED BAD!

But now SONY is back ready to take its belt back from M$…not Nintendo. If you want to include Nintendo then you might as well include each corporation as a company in whole. If games are games then money is money and M$ is kicking both of their asses. This generation console war is ONLY between SONY and Microsoft. To all the people keep bring up the Wii in articles like this only shows how pissed you’re going to be when the PS3 over takes the 360 in sales “WORLDWIDE”

Also you EUROS, and by euros I mean the ass holes in the U.(S).K (United states kinda) Stop shouting how much the 360 has a bigger lead in the U.S. You don’t live here and you damn sure don’t like the country (but you guys love to mimic our life style so much) you only bring up the U.S. when its time to defend your precious XBOX! GO BUY A PS3 too MR. and MRS. hardcore gamer.

Funny as hell how Mike and Psychotext don’t post as often but once an article pops about SONY beating M$ at something they comment more in that article than they do in a whole months time combined ??? Doing damage control a bit there guys….I’m just grateful Gadzooks! hasn’t crawled from under his bridge yet. The three of you together are the equivent of the three red rings (you’re funny to watch fail, but you still suck) :D

@51 why do you treat all this as a “them versus us” thing, its just game systems buddy. the sales part of it doesnt interest me, as long as great games are coming out for ps3 and 360 i wont be bothered by all the numbers.

    #53 5 years ago
  54. theevilaires

@53 go back and read comments 1-50 before talking your bull shit against me. I said from the beginning its a stupid imaginary war…its all in fun…but be real certain events have held back the PS3…its not like people just woke up one day and said fuck SONY they suck.

The worlds economic crash, SONY be arrogant, and the lack of entertainment for older people and them wanting to do something different has hindered PS3 from being on top at this point and day. But they’re getting there.

@52 Don’t know why but most people from the U.K. think their shit don’t stink. They think they are better than the rest of the euros over there for some reason. Very cocky people they are.

I assume that by “MS makes great software” you mean their consoles OS, not their games?

    #61 5 years ago
  62. Crysis

@61, MS mainly pays for their exclusives, while other manufactures build up their own studios, MS tends to buy them & their projects (not the first time MS has either)-imo a very low form of competition

    #62 5 years ago
  63. Gekidami

Well i know, but you asked if there were any arguments to your statement up there, you said that MS make great software, and if you’re including games in that then i’d say theres grounds to argue. Thats why i asked.

    #63 5 years ago
  64. daytripper

@62 you make out sony and nintendo dont pay for anything either, for example the latest announcements regarding the EA exclusive PS3 stuff, what do you think Sony does to get them, offer coffee and cakes? its the main reason i laugh at the “M$” tag plenty seem to post.

The only thing I see different is first party, where for me Sony and Nintendo are much better in that respect, something Microsoft really needs to work on. :-D

    #64 5 years ago
  65. Gadzooks!

    @63

You have no grounds to argue. MS 1st party games like Halo, Fable and Forza are up there with the very best games ever made, both critically and in terms of quality, so the fact that they make great software is not up for debate.

    #65 5 years ago
  66. Crysis

@64, i’m just saying MS are infamous for this, they don’t just do it with their games, but many, many of the software you see today on Windows were designed & made by small companies & bought out by MS (not always willingly might i add)

    #66 5 years ago
  67. Gekidami

    @65
But that wasnt the original point, Crysis worded his post in a way that suggests that each is good at that thing and the others arent. Lets face it, MS in terms of first party games is miles behind the other 2, theirs is far from being the ‘greatest’.

    #67 5 years ago
  68. zoopdeloop

    @58
I don’t think that’s how it goes this gen.
Microsoft doesn’t have that much of greater software (than Sony or Nintendo) on their own. They just have better 3rd party dev support and exclusive deals…up until now.
If you really put a though behind it aside from other factors Microsoft’s success this gen also comes from the Dvd format.

From Piracy to the support of 3rd party devs.
Blu ray may be superior giving much more space and flexibility but developers wouldn’t excuse themselves with DLC so easily and make profit out of it, if they had only this format in both consoles.

So in a sense Microsoft gave developers what they wanted “finite” (less space than the Blu ray)so they(developers)could revenue from DLC(which is essential for them)in a way excusing themselves for not putting that extra content they had in store in the first place

As for piracy. It contributed in the success of Psone,Ps2 and now 360.I know a lot of people that are not willing to pay more than 10$ for a game especially when there are plenty of games they want to experience. They always been like that since Psone days and keep going now with the 360 without having much of an interest on multiplayer if it means they can pay much less for their games

    #68 5 years ago
  69. Gadzooks!

    @67

All 3 platform holders put out some very good games on thier very good machines and first party software sales on all 3 platforms is healthy.

There is no ‘best’, although you could quantify which is most popular by totting up sales figures. That wouldnt serve any purpose other than to get people arguing though.

We all have our preferences, but to say any one platform has the ‘best games’ is trying to force an opinion shaped object into a fact shaped hole. ;)

    Does any of it matter?

Fact is , next gen or not, the Wii is beating both of these systems.

Does anyone know who won Gen(megadrive) or SNES? I think it was SNES, but it wasn’t by large margin. Thos I think the SNES sold for longer(and that) may have widdened the gap.

Reminds me of this gen. Take the Wii out of the picture, if you like. And you have two very comparable systems. And at the end of the day the sales numbers will be close. And down the road we will look back and think they both did well.

So beyond nerd raging fanboys, and game industry hype/sensationilism … does any of it matter? Forget about the 3M systems sold gap, and think about the fact that each system is pushing near 40M sold. Thats pretty good.

    And this is healthy.

If Nintendo, Sony, or MS had zero competitiob the industry would suffer from it. The fact that two mainstream “core” systems are neck and neck is a great thing for the games industry.

Look at great exclusive deals that come out of it as a result. Each company trying to out do the other. And win us over.

I say that is a good thing.

But if you folks wanna sit back and call each other names go for it.

I am going to go back and play Hydro Thunder, I still have one VG247 members time to beat on one track – you know who you are!

  73. Crysis

@71, that’s not true, combined the ps3 & 360 have nearly 80mil, the wii is around 73mil, care to elaborate how it ‘slaughters’ bot the ps3 & 360 combined then?
If you mean by profit, it’ll be foolish to argue, both consoles are much more expensive to make, the wii is a slightly improve gamecube with some fancy perephials, & both MS & Sony had several bad years between the ps3 originally being sold @ a loss & the RRoD

    #73 5 years ago
  74. Boris Fett

    @73 Profit is profit.

Maybe Microsoft and Sony shouldn’t have produced such needlessly expensive machines, eh?

    #74 5 years ago

@Boris, the 360 was not ‘needlessly expensive’ & i personally consider the ps3 the ‘luxury’ console, no doubt the most conveniant console, atleast to me (never have to pay to play online & i get great multiplatform games-best of both worlds?)

Fable is no longer accounted as a top game since they ruined in after the first.

Also, Forza? Meeh sure it sells well and all that but naah.

IN MY OPINION, the only reason Halo ever was successful was that it was the ONLY game that was actually decent on Vanilla-Xbox.
IN MY OPINION, all the games have been really stiff, there’s poor detail in them and it’s only the first game that actually had a decent story.
Halo Reach is in my opinion the first and only Halo game to look any good.

LOL” types are all busy elswhere. PS3 is ahead in the entire world outside US which given it had a launch date at leat a year and a half later than the MS console shows that Sonys console is doing just fine. Unfortunately the “ps3 is dead! LOL” types will be back out in force come the next NPD figures…..LOL.
