Report – Uncharted film producers looking at directors

uncharted2a3

According to a report over on the LA Times, Sony’s still planning on adapting Uncharted into a film, and is currently searching for a director.

Reportedly David O. Russell is on the list, although no one is confirmed at this time because Sony is still in the “let’s sit and have a chat” phase.

Russell’s resume includes such films as Spanking the Monkey, Flirting with Disaster, and The Fighter.

In more news, Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer were brought-in to show a tentative script last fall, and the producers, one of whom is Charles Roven (Dark Knight), liked it enough to get things moving along.

The report goes on to state that Sony’s possibly trying to push the project into the studio’s 2011 summer production schedule but, it has another film in the works already, so that may not happen.

A film based on Uncharted has been in rumorville for quite a while, and last year, Nolan North said in a podcast that he’d heard Hugh Jackman was on a Nathan Drake “wish list” of sorts.

I hope Sony Pictures will use MILLIONS in this movie.

I don’t understand why Sony don’t make movies on all their first party titles. It could be a massive hype train.

Right. But what if the movie fails? I still think they could release comics and books to strengthen their titles but a movie cost “MILLIONS” …

And some other director please. Tony Scott comes to my mind.

@3 and what if it cost millions? Sony have Sony Pictures, Columbia Pictures, Tristar Pictures. They have ENTIRE divisions to make movie blockbuster. If they want, they can start making movies on every 1st party franchise they want RIGHT NOW. It’s not like other game companies must to talk with Holywood and e.t.c.

Sony have its own Holywood big studios to make movies, see? :) They can just take their own top tier writers and directors for a movie.

Shure they could. But they won’t throw money outta the window. Making a Blockbuster on its own, is one thing. Taking a franchise into the cinemas another. If you mean movies like ResidentEvil, DOOM and Hitman – than meh.
But you’re right in terms of Tomb Raider – gotta love Brangelina!

Because they run the risk of diluting the brand and as such destroying interesting in their titles.

I feel they do that enough already by creating a lot of their flagship titles on PSP as well as PS3.
It highlights that the graphics and presentation is one of the only thing separating today’s titles from last gens.

Either get Nathan Fillion or Nolan North to play Drake or you might aswell not bother doing that movie, as it is not going to be Uncharted.

In the same way that it is entire pointless to make an Iron Man movie without Robert Downey Jr.

Some of the more relevant films Russell’s directed include Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees.

Good films, in my opinion, but the word on the street is that the guy is a bit of a dick. He had a fight with George Clooney and one time he put Christopher Nolan in a headlock.
