Ninja Gaiden 3 will be “spectacular”, says Tecmo

ninja gaiden

Ninja Gaiden 3 will be awesome, brilliant, “spectacular”. At least, that seems to be the impression given by Koei-Tecmo managing director Yoshiki Sugiyama.

“Ninja Gaiden is such a beloved and important franchise for us,” he said to CVG, “and fans expect such great things from the next installment that we need to indulge in a little nurturing.

“If and when we talk about a new Ninja Gaiden, it will be spectacular.”

The last Ninja Gaiden was released nearly two years ago for Xbox 360, with a PS3 release following last year. Soon after the release of Ninja Gaiden II, creator Tomonobu Itagaki famously left the company and sued for unpaid royalties on the game.

The case has since been settled, with Itagaki now running Valhalla Game Studios.

It’ll never be awesome as long as it’s still Ninja Gaiden.

/possibly controversial

What else should it be, in order to be awesome, Blerk?

Ninja Gaiden II was quite simply the most crushing disappointment I’ve ever suffered from gaming.

It was just about passable if you kept to the 2 standard difficulties, but for some reason with the 2 harder settings they decided to make it 10000 times cheaper than NGB.

But despite that it was still about 10 times easier on Master Ninja than the first game anyway. I had about 350 deaths on Mentor and Master Ninja combined… once you got past the first 2 levels it was piss easy all the way.

Basically, I hope NG3 will be a beat em up like NGB rather than a hack and slash game like NG2.

ninjanutta I hated NG2 because it’s a huge missed opportunity. The fighting engine is great, but it was let down by some very lame enemy attack patterns, poor weapon balance, poor boss design..

I enjoyed my first run through on the harder of the 2 default difficulties, but Mentor and Master Ninja were a chore. On NGB, they made the game more fun, and more difficult. On NG2 they made the game cheaper and not much more difficult.

There’s also the matter of the way that once you get the Falcon’s talons you can kill any enemy on Master Ninja using the same combo over and over and never take any damage. In fact, it’s one of the only ways to survive anyway because of all the cheap off screen one hit kill projectile attacks the game throws at you :(

Oh, and they ruined the survival challenges. The first one on MN can take about 30-40 minutes to beat, and one hit from any of the 120 enemies kills you. And half the time they attack from offscreen.

I thought NG2 was a real disappointment. Graphically it looked very poor in places, especially the New York level, which looked worse than GTAIV- and that’s an open world game! Using real-world settings was a mistake I think, the game just lost that distinctive look it had when it used fictional locales.

There was terrible slow-down in places where there were too many enemies on-screen. Couldn’t they have just made the effort to make sure the game never tried to display more enemies than it can manage (I believe they did do this on the PS3 version).

Overall, I think Itagaki knew he was leaving and just did a rush job to get the game out of the way. The bosses were dull, the levels bland and the gameplay a let-down. NG3 is going to have to be really special to get the franchise back on track.

Now that i think about it NG2 was pretty horse

the only thing it had going for it was dismembering limbs, the first game was better in every other way

in fact, i think i should rent sigma it’ll be a nice blast from the past, i loved those first levels in the ninja village and the sky ship

And as wacky as it was i quite liked the plot of the first game, the 2nd’s story was utter tripe…oh apart from Volf of course, the four armed wind warewolf :P

I loved NGS2 more than NGS1 mostly because it had you traveling around the world, and I have a soft spot for games that make me feel like a badass tourist beating up bad guys.

Hopefully we can finally play the whole game with different characters now (gimme Ayane, Kasumi, Hayate, Rachel and Momiji now), and maybe play through it cooperatively too!

EDIT: Great, I intended to edit my post and ended up accidentally deleting all of it.

EDIT 2: @17 There, saved ya. :P

I certainly hope this one will be as or more bloodier the Ninja Gaiden 2 for the 360 and not that disgusting care bear crap mist from Sigma 2.
