Square Enix Europe CEO Phil Rogers has confirmed that it shut down the developer of the Battlestations series Eidos Hungary.

Speaking in an interview with Develop, he admitted the call to shut down the studio was made in October.

“We took the decision back in October,” said Rogers, “and this all goes back to the broad strategy of focusing on games that are either first or best.”

He added: “We were pleased with Eidos Hungary, but I think we realised that to be first or best in the RTS genre was going to be really challenging. It wasn’t necessarily something we were going to win.”

Eidos Hungary had seen over development of the two games from the Battlestations series for PS3 and 360: Pacific and Midway.

Woah suprised to hear this, from my understanding the battlestations games were supposed to be pretty good weren’t they? A couple of my friends used to always say that Pacific was awesome! So they gonna shut down anything they can’t win at? I hope to never see Eidos/Square Enix release a shit game ever again in that case as apparently you have to be the best of your genre in their eyes!

This is a crying shame. I don’t know what this “first and best” nonsense is about. Pacific was a wonderful game. But it not being a dumbed-down game for everyone I guess meant the end.

oh good, let’s close some more EU studios so we can ship even more development to China.

battle stations and midway games are pc games that should stick to pc gaming. battle station is a genre that consoles fanboys would not have liked.

closing down mid way is 1 less unique game with game play. The gaming market is already full of Fps.

It really is a shame to see game devs and genres get destroyed because of consoles. Sony and Microsoft entering tha gaming is the worse thing that ever happened to gaming.

many great franchises made on pc only to be sent to die on consoles

Really disappointing. Both battlestation titles were well-made, intelligent games.
