Uncharted 2 “the perfect example” of storytelling, says Crysis 2 writer

uncharted2

Halo? “Bullshit”. Modern Warfare 2? “An immense disappointment”. Uncharted 2? According to Crysis 2 writer Richard Morgan, it was “the perfect example” of storytelling in games.

“There is absolutely no reason why you can’t weld a really good narrative to a really cool shooting game,” Morgan told NowGamer.

“Uncharted 2 is the perfect example…it’s tongue-in-cheek, but it’s a compelling story and it’s a very straight-forward gameplay dynamic.

“Crysis 2, fine, it is fundamentally about firefights – about shooting stuff – but so was BioShock. The whole point about BioShock was the texture that made it.

Crysis 2 releases this Holiday season for PS3, 360 and PC. Catch part one of our interview with developer Crytek and its CEO Cevat Yerli here. Part two will go live at some point this week.

Must be nice to be the crysis writer. Everytime you shout something it’s on the internet.

First a mistake saying that Halo’s story sucks, and now he wants me loving him because of this story? Fail.

Uncharted 2: Dialogs and characters? Yes. Plot and story? No. The tongue was sticking out of cheek. It’s hard to put my finger on, I think the narrative falls in the uncanny valley between a “regular story” and over-the-top.

Heh heh – people in glass houses, etc. He’d better hope that Crysis 2 story is super top-notch, because the Internet remembers! :-D

Someone has to shut this guy up even though I agree with him so far on mostly everything he has said these past weeks.

But dude insults Halo and compliments Uncharted I expect fanboys to go ape shit over this.

Has he said what he thought of the first Crysis’ story then?

I tend to disagree with some of his statements.

The story in UC2 was lame, Indy-lite, shite that for the second time relied on criminally stupid stuff to make it fantastical, no doubt hoping that would make the story interesting. It didn’t, it detracted again from the overall vibe.

The characters were, at best, standard stereotypical fare. C’mon. The tall dark handsome good honest American, his blond lovely woman, some double crossing douches that signposted their intent at every turn. You’re spoiling us with such invention.

However, the dialogue was, comparatively, fine and the acting was above adequate and went well with the models.

The biggest + to it was that they conveyed their simple story in a pretty simple way without screwing it up. Many games absolutely fail to do even that, but jeez if this is now the pinnacle of story telling in games were even worse off that I imagine.

The whole point about BioShock was the texture that made it.

Oooo… this guy’s not trying to suggest that BioShock is art or something, is he?

Halo came out years before Uncharted 2, when story telling in games wasn’t a mjor focus. To fault Halo on being an older game is like faulting a NES not being able to play red steel

There are older games then Halo that had better stories. Halo came out before UC2, but in no way did it come out during a time when story telling wasnt seen as being important.
And anyway, what would be Halo 2 and 3′s excuse in that case?

I actually agree with him.
I found the story in UC 2 very easy to follow.
Sure it was no Dickens but I reckon he means the way it was done in the game.
Just my tuppence worth.

I loved the Uncharted 2 narrative, but this guys mud slinging is getting a little tiring.

Ironically the last dev I remember going on such a war path regarding narrative, was the writer of Haze. As Blerk says, the internet remembers, so he’d better hope the Crysis 2 narrative is a work of art.
