Kojima: Console will be dead “in the near future”

Speaking at this morning’s press conference for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in Japan, Hideo Kojima has said the consoles will be phased out “in the near future”.

The MGS creator and head of Kojima Productions said that players should have their experiences “on the go”.

“In the near future, we’ll have games that don’t depend on any platform,” said Kojima. “Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel — wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience.”

But SCEJ boss Hiroshi Kawano said that while he respects what Kojima said, he did add it was “a bold prediction”.

We hope he continues to develop for platforms, but we deeply respect his sense of taking on a challenge,” he said.

Earlier this morning, the developer announced a new collaboration with Capcom to include a bonus mode in MGS: Peace Walker that sees Monster Hunter included in the game.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker releases on April 29 in Japan, June 11 in the US and June 18 in the UK for PSP.

The only current console project in developer at Kojima Productions is Metal Gear Solid: Rising for PS3 and 360, which may or may not get a re-reveal this month.

pc gaming is already on the go. when I travel I use my gaming laptop. steam is perfect because I can ply my games right off the internet.

I am going to get iphone at some point. I have been meaning to buy one.

yes consoles will be phase out and sooner than you think. There is a major shift taking place. Not only are major pc companies coming down on game devs and console hardware companies. a good example code masters getting their bought by a pc gaming companies and cloud gaming such as onlive . Dd is destroying retail too. Your only seeing the beginning of hardware companies problems.

I agree to a certain point if devs could make games like MGS peace walker on a hand held as good as Kojima.

yes the death of consoles are coming faster than you think too as well.

this console generation has more than pissed off the top of the food chain for gaming. With the talk of pc gaming dying and retail. There is a major shift taking place.

Do you really think Kojima was inferring that highly priced gaming laptops and desktop PCs are the future of gaming?

they sure will be dead at some point in the future, but saying that it “should be the same experience” is laughable, typical japanese bullshit. I know some people enjoy playing console like games on the go, but many don’t.

btw, I guess this is yet another quote taken in isolation and removed from it’s original context.

I agree with Razor’s comment. What else can be done to further approve games.

    We have:

    Custom soundtracks
    Upgradable Storage (HDD)
    Multi media functionality
    Online Gaming
    Wireless controllers
    Motion Controls

What else can they do besides better graphics and psychics

    @NGCes26294BIV

you have no idea do you? enjoy your last generation of consoles because they don’t have a future. code masters 50% percent of their share just got bought by a pc gaming company. That is just the begining of console problems.

agin cloud gaming and web base gaming is also a major threat to consoles. lets not talk about major pc gaming companies.

    #10 5 years ago
  11. Erthazus

Consoles won’t be dead in the near future.

Reason is very simple. As long as there are console manufacturers such as Nintendo or Sony, they won’t miss the opportunity making money. If they want to create a machine they have money for that and we can’t do nothing about it.

Look at the Sony assets. 50 billion dollars. I repeat again 50 (!) Motherfucking billion dollars and you think they will just dismiss its entire division? YOU SERIOUS?

Cloud Gaming is the only thing that can make a certain generation last a little bit longer, but not completely destroy it.

Thats a reality and you can say what you want. Hate it or not, but consoles will not go in the near future.

@7 PC is not that highly priced please… Stop.

I’m not quite sure what Kojima means…but I hope he’s right. Console gaming definitely holds our gaming experience back years, because developers cannot create anything beyond what the box is capable of. It’s a shame really, considering all the advancements in hardware that have been made in the last few years, and there’s very little games that are taking advantage of this. Instead, developers are trying to find new ways in which they can keep the same standard of graphics and make it run on consoles; for example Crysis 2.

    #13 5 years ago
  14. Erthazus

@13 Companies like Sony, Nintendo don’t care about how consoles hold gaming experience.

Want to play Crysis 2 with max graphics? Buy a PC. Can’t? Your problems. Its a life and we can’t do something about it.

Considering the UK won’t even have a standard 2gb line in all homes in the next two years, let alone enough for HD streaming, I think it’s safe to say that cloud-based gaming is a long way away from the mainstream.

    Oh, and also…

“code masters 50% percent of their share just got bought by a pc gaming company”

No it didn’t. It got bought by a private entertainment congolomerate, and ONE of their FOURTEEN subsidiaries is an online gaming portal, Zapak.com.

Get your facts straight before vommiting on the comment boards.

there is a lot more bigger powerful companies in pc gaming that will rip console gaming apart, That is just fact. Also pc gaming is fast adpting platform that means new tech will out strip console real fast. pc gaming and pc gamers are like the borg and console gaming is like the ice queen.

The guy is talking about a mobile console with the features of a boxed one. What’s with the sensationalism here? It’s an obvious move to me. Once miniaturization catches up, it would be stupid not to combine both types of consoles. Last time I checked the DS was still the best selling console in the world. Add the functionality of a boxed console and probably also a slate PC? Golden.

@1 If you want to advocate PC gaming, don’t EVER mention laptops. That’s arguably the most faulty, most unsupported, most inadequate platform for games there is.

I think people missed the point that Sony already registered: Playstation cloud.

Microsoft is doing cloud thingy too.

    and people don’t understand it.

    #25 5 years ago
  26. blackdreamhunk

pc gaming will have cloud however there will always be people making pc games that are none cloud. pc gaming will always have different kinds of game devs and indie game devs.

pc gaming will always have mod support and old games.

all those console game right now will some day end up on the pc just like every console games has from many consoles.

BDH can you prove anything you say other than youtube clips that are completely unrelated? Give me an EA press release saying they won’t support consoles, show me something that doesn’t say the majors are not making more money on Consoles than PCs, show me something, even a leaked internal memo…. no, nothing, nada? then fuck off. indies make great things but they don’t drive the business like it or not.

Also Kojima is talking about increased mobility, PCs don’t do that. He is talking about new handhelds that are more capable of things. Such as a PSP that connects to PSN live actively, or another handheld that will bridge the gap of active and passive users (online vs offline only)

Think before you speak, or get some proof to back you up.

    #34 5 years ago
  35. blackdreamhunk

    @Mad-elph

I like to give you tube because videos are the ultimate proof so people can see the proof. Unlike you there Mad-elph who has no no proof.

by the way I use more than just youtube vids to prove my point.

what do you call a laptop then?????? what do you call the new ipad then. man your not very bright are you??????

lattops have mobility the new ipad mobility!!!!!!!!!!

  36. theevilaires

but consoles are PCs though. Look at the PS3. You can use a key board and mouse with some games (UT3 I think) and even make mods to put into that game just like the PC version.

You can connect a PC to your HDTV and use a wireless mouse and keyboard or DS3 and Duke3 to play games as well.

So I guess the console market is the PC market which would explain the fall of the PC market sales :D or I’m just crazy like BDH :D

@7 silly boy, you can get a good gaming rig for £500ish :) but obviously you can go higher £700ish for abit more or go to the extremes :) PC Gaming doesnt always have to be expensive :) And if you buy the parts then build it yourself then its even better :D

I think in the future will be less about the platform they are on. 100% agree.

    Consoles dying? Yes and no.

In the near future, I expect to see cloud based services invading concoles, handhelds and PC.

Most of those devices will be light weight small, and able to play on your TV or on the go.

So yes, I agree w/Kojima. It is just that it isn’t as flashy and dramatic as the headline reads. I see it as more of an evolution of gaming and not the firey death on consoles as BDH might want to suggest.

All of this is one(maybe two) gens away, dependant on cloud working, and nothing to worry about. It should be good for most gamers, great for game devs, bad for game pubs, and really bad for brick and morter stores like Game, Gamestop, etc.

    #40 5 years ago
  41. Erthazus

@41 but whats the point? when Sony already registered *Playstation Cloud*, Microsoft doing its own cloud stuff…

    @OlderGamer

    ahahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahah

consoles are turning into pc ‘s in fact open them consoles up you can run any kind of OS.

pc gaming is destroying consoles gaming. by the way pc gaming will not only have cloud gaming but it have many types of games and gaming. Yea pc gaming will always have none cloud games too!

sony is losing money on them super computers with the ps3

heck even web based gaming is treat to them consoles. You can now run console graphics for a web based game and the best part it all free for pc gamers.

    #42 5 years ago
  43. Mad-elph

Sure consoles are PC like machines, but closed systems that have fewer upgrades are much more widely distributed than PC gaming. PC component manufacturers are supported they standard contracts of parts supplies to console and non-gaming focused PCs.

Yes I know a laptop can run, but we suffer bandwidth problems and most laptops don’t have 3G or other cell phone service. So its all just local gaming, unless you are at a hub for wifi, which is no different than sitting at home (therefore it is not mobile)

I like that you mentioned the iPad, its a closed system, not a PC and can be used as a mobile gaming device. It is WAY more like a console than a PC, so please explain how it shows that PC will defeat consoles.

You vids don’t prove anything, they never have. The E3 vid didn’t suggest consoles were dead, but rather that their life would be extended by new peripherals.

Once you can get a laptop that is not dependent on a wifi connection to access Steam or whatever, then you get said device in the hands of millions and have it openly modded not locked to a closed service then maybe maybe PCs will dominate. But you won’t the more focused the mobile space becomes (iPad, PSP, Handheld) and smaller the devices become (harder for Joe public to slip in a new graphics card) then you have people locked to a dependent system (which is no different from consoles).

Sure some people can mod their laptops, but few do. Laptops are crippled in hardware do to space constraints and heat.

Plus many companies make more money from console game sales than PCs simply do to a dedicated install base be it 20 million PS3 or whatever vs. the millions of PCs that can’t play the games plus the millions who don’t buy the games.

If you can show me something that says devs make more money across the board on PC games than consoles, in sales and in profit then you will see devs moving away from consoles. but since the majority of people buy consoles and game on consoles and support console developed games with hard cold cash, instead of stealing it online for PC then you will not see devs move away from consoles. period. Cloud service or not.

You can run any type of OS on a console?
Only with a lot of work.
The PS3 still hasn’t been hacked, and has had it’s Linux capability removed.
That doesn’t strike me as any kind of OS.

Consoles may be dead soon. But I doubt PC gaming will be what takes over.
Not everyone can afford stupidly expensive rigs, and Indie games can’t sustain a rampant market that requires constant fulfilment.

    @Eregol

wow your a real noob sony ps3 has been hacked along time ago. In fact sony’s OS has been dumb onto the internet.

I am sure hackers are going made picking sony’s software apart.

keep pissing off pc gamers and you will have more than just hacked consoles.

not only consoles will be attack by big companies. there is the pc gaming hackers.

PS I am an owner of Macs, I play on consoles because it is a better experience. Who needs the headache of dealing wiht drivers and new upgrades ever 6 months to play the newest game etc. The fact that morons pay $600 for a vid card then complain that $600 console with a few games is expensive shows that the people who support PCs are silly.

YES PC games can have more avenues of opportunity for development. But that is because of the mouse and keyboard. Devs of console games have designed their games to be simple. They want to make the interaction simple so more people buy it. When you have a keyboard with 80plus keys vs a controller with 12 then you are more free to develop things, therefore you get RTS games on PCs vs consoles. But that does not mean the death of consoles.

It all comes down to closed system (console) vs open (PC) as that is what you’ve argued before. When an open system (PC or laptop) becomes so widely accepted as the only way to play then we’ll see the death of consoles. But that is not the way things are going. People are seeing closed systems as better. Develop a game/app for iPhone or iPad and you will sell more. The iPad or iPhone is closed in much the same way consoles are.

Cloud will only truely be free and PC like when every phone can connect to the same serivce, not locked to Apple, BBs, Nokia etc… Until then the cloud generation will sell you a box to sit besides your TV that connects to a closed system somewhere.

    ahahahahahahahahahahahaa

really now pc gaming is huge. pc gaming has soo meny games that even EA has to move over to pc gaming online. online is the home to pc gamers.

how are those over 11 000 bankuprt console game devs doing these days.

do you even know what cloud gaming is….it’s a super computer.

an open system is trash just like the ice queen is trash. the borg will out grow a close system.

console gaming is at the bottom of the food that is fact!

hardware companies don’t make money on old hardware.

    #50 5 years ago
  51. Mad-elph

So where is the hacked PS3 that ruins sony, cause noone has made any software to run on it. No one has stolen any software, so all you have is sony selling consoles and people buying games, no loss for sony.

Crysis is impressive, as if Project Offset, but again these are games that are possible on consoles, graphically they (the consoles) may not be there yet, but neither at 95% of PCs. Crysis 2 is to be on console too right?

The images might be nice on PCs, but it is not the only thing in the world is it? Plus that Project Offset didn’t look any more impressive than God of War 3.

  52. theevilaires

Well if you want my honest opinion I don’t want to see consoles/PCs go away. I know it may be a pain to keep up with exclusives and what version of a game to buy for which console but I like owning multiple machines.

The 360 has custom soundtrack option built right in the OS. The PS3 has easy upgradable hard drives. The PC has the best graphics. The N64 and Gamecube had 4 controller ports.

I just like having all the unique differences. To some it can be a pain keeping up but I love it. I would also love to have a machine that could do all in 1 and the PS3 comes the closest which is why its my prefered system but that doesn’t mean I don’t like having a 360 or other machine.

I don’t want cloud gaming and I hate the idea of it so much, but as long as its just an option and not a full blown only choice I’m satisfied.

depends pretty much on how you define ´near future´if we´re talking 10+ years i agree. cloud gaming ain´t ready yet. this will take a while. but the idea of playing content on several devices is pretty much my gaming wet dream. but again…this will take some long long years i believe…

    #54 5 years ago

    @polygem

there is not just cloud gaming there is web base gaming that can now run console graphics.

lets not for get the new tech pc gaming has like laptops and and the new ipad.

by the way nothing beats high pc gaming nothing on the market not even cloud base gaming.

    #55 5 years ago
  56. Mad-elph

the bankuprt console game devs were mostly bought out and phased out, and the people there were brought into the big pubs.

How many games are started for PCs that never get off the ground? Anyone? We’ll never know really cause all these mom and pop shops you mention don’t cut it when it comes to forking over cold hard cash, which is what console users do every week.

“do you even know what cloud gaming is….it’s a super computer.” No shit really? maybe its even a stack of 100 PS3? Of course its a central computer, but that doesn’t mean its a PC, can you go and mod it to your liking? nope. Does it run windows? maybe maybe not, it could run linux for all you know. Does it matter, no, because it is a closed service which is not any different than consoles.

“an open system is trash just like the ice queen is trash” What are you talking about? You keep talking about modding systems etc, upgrading graphics etc…. but consoles sell millions every gen, increasing each gen and people keep buying games all the time.

last time i checked I have alot more pc games than your consoles.

    http://adrianwerner.wordpress.com/games-of-2010/

if i really want to pay console games I can run emulators and yes I can play ps3 games with emulaters.

go kiss the future of console gaming good by.

so how are them 11 000 console game devs gone bankuprt because of them consoles.

you pc gaming has preduce made companies like crytek and cdproject

I am not even counting the web based games and mmos.

  59. Mad-elph

It sounds like you are beginning to back into a corner in 55. Be careful.

Techs need time to evolve. that is why consoles don’t have the best graphics, but it is also why browser based games are as good as console graphics. Bandwidth is one major thing.

Next gen consoles will be as good as the current PCs (a 2 year delay of top end lets say) But does everyone care for top end? NO THEY DO NOT, hence you buy a console which costs (now) $300 and you get 8 years out of it. Can you buy a PC, laptop or desktop for $300 that can run Crysis? No you can’t

sony is such a dumb company not only have they lost billions on the ps3. super computer buyers buy the a ton of ps3′s and use it as a super computer. So sony is not only losing on the ps3 they are now losing money on the super computer market too.

what a joke………I guess share holders have money to burn. Just like a ton of game devs with high production costs.

Did a google search, no proof just lies of vids showing it running. Plus you have to buy the PS3 game as the system has not be cracked Oh you bought it, so Sony and the Dev got paid? They didn’t lose any money on consoles, how (IF THIS WAS REALLY TRUE) does this hurt Sony or consoles, just a larger market to sell games.

If it is for enjoyment of players, there should be one console. People are disappointed when a game they want to play is for one other console (the under-used one) if they own another at all. So they either pay out to support the game, by buying a whole new machine as well, or don’t play the game they’d enjoy.

It’s true that the makers don’t care either way because they’ll sell that extra machine, but I’d prefer gamers to all enjoy and support playing games (with no reference needing to be taken in to mind, of how the game is played.)
The way that things have progressed in to this gen, is precisely the reason why there should be one cons…Machine, sorry! that allows ALL games (aside from PC) to be played.

People then just buy and play the games they want. With one machine, it’s an all-new challenge for games to stand out! If Nintendo wants to make its own device, then it can go and explore that (because it has proven success in its own endeavors), but the HD platform should accept all HD games, because without that, and a lack of BASE disctinction, it’s gamers that get the rawest deal, no matter their “platform of choice”!

The future he’s talking about doesn’t include a gaming PC either.

It’s a platform agnostic future in wich you simply acces your games on what ever device you happen to have handy at the time.
Much like the internet is accasable on pretty much anything these days, from your TV to your phone to your computer.

blackdreamhunk… you are an idiot.PC gaming has been reduced to a niche biz. WHo the fuck wants to keep upgrading video cards and Winblows? Nerds like you. Buddy, hey the 90′s are so over! 3DFX is dead!!!

It’s already being predicted that devices like the iPad will replace traditional desktop PC’s in millions of homes in the not so distant future. And that will reduce PC gaming to an even smaller niche market. Imagine an future six-core/custom GPU iPad that features Wireless HDMI…

As the years go by brute force GPU’s which power your Crysis et al’ will also go the way of the dodo as Open Computing Language, CUDA, enabled devices become the big money makers for ATI/NVIDIA. These devices will have massive computational power and will be capable of amazing graphics.

    #71 5 years ago
  72. Freek

No, not specificly. It’s done by your phone, your netbook, what ever entertainment box sits under the TV and also a computer.

But what he’s talking about is that no one platform defines gaming, that it’s merely something you can acces where ever you are.
And if you can do that for games you can do that for other software aswell. Meaning that what we know as a PC or a console no longer exists.
To be replaced by services rather then dedicated hardware platforms.

    #72 5 years ago
  73. blackdreamhunk

mortiferus do you mmo’s a niche product?

high end pc gaming is worth 9 billion alone, do you really think hardware companies are going to let console steam roll high pc gaming your joking.

hardware companies take pc gaming very seriously or they would never had made the pc gaming alliance. companies like onlive take pc gaming very seriously or they would never made onlive.

a lot of big companies would not eat you small companies alive if pc gaming was niche product……I am osrry but your gaming media can’t lie for you this time.

    #73 5 years ago
  74. blackdreamhunk

    @Freek

pc gaming became a service a long time ago, it’s that some of you publishers and game devs are late to come to that realization.

you only need to look at companies such blizzard,bio-ware,arena net and iron clade games to see that.

    #74 5 years ago
  75. Freek

The mistake you are making is still seeing his comments as “pc gaming” that is not what he is saying at all.
The device no longer matters, PC, consoles, it’s all meaningless. There are no more platforms in Kojima’s future. And that has not happend yet at all. Steam, WoW, they still require a dedicated hardware platform to run and a game you buy only works on that platform.

You like to filter everything through your own reality of console vs PC. The rest of the world does not work like that, it is all in your head.
