Reggie: Move is “Wii-too”

The Regginator’s offensive against PlayStation Move continues, with the Nintendo of America boss now calling the motion controller a “Wii-Too” effort from Sony.
“Looking at what PlayStation is doing, it feels very ‘Wii-too,’” said the exec, talking to the LA Times.
“In terms of Microsoft, we’ll see when they actually show off their software. I think our competitors will be challenged in a number of ways: bringing fun experiences to life, because in the end that’s what the consumer wants.
“Our competitors will be challenged on providing the great value we have always provided. Our consumers have a system that they love. Is that consumer suddenly going to stop and go do something else?”
Reggie’s been a vociferous detractor of Move since it was announced at GDC in San Francisco earlier this month, saying you won’t need one if you have a Wii, that he’s flattered at Sony’s “imitation” and that Nintendo would be “embarrassed” to be bringing out motion devices this year.
Move’s out this autumn. But Reggie doesn’t care. Obviously.

Starting to feel the heat there Reggie?
People can now go with the Ps3 or 360 and not be forced with just casual games they can go play God of War 3 or Halo.

Well, I don’t see the Wii doing all the cool stuff Sony showed in the Engadget demo.

The difference here is that Move is definitely better.

He would say that.
He is paid by Nintendo after all.
And yes, Move is more precise, and can properly realise 3D space.

After what Anton Mikhailov showed at Engadget demo what i want to say, that from what i saw its a much, much, much better experience. I mean, you can do a lot with it. Casual consumer or mature gamer. You can do a lot of apps there.
It was just a demo, but it was 100% better then everything else from Motion controls what i saw. The only problem is the fucking software. Sony, bring the big guns please!

@2 Agreed
@3 Agreed again hahahaha
Really, Nintendo should feel sort of nervous. I dont see an immediate and drastic change in pace for people Move-ing from the dated Wii to the ever growing PS3. I think it will take some time for consumers to get wind of what is truly going to be the best motion “conrtoller”(Natal is cool looking but it isnt a controller. Just saying before the Xbox fans yell at me) experience (Move). Nintendo will still have Mario, Zelda, and Metroid to keep consumers with Nintendo but once Sony pulls out the casual “Fitness and Sports” games, it will be a losing battle for Nintendo because not only will hardcore gamers already be playing on the PS3 but then the casual community will be shifting over for the HD games, Blu Ray movies, Hard Drive, DLC, and the new Motion controls.

This kind of arrogance is what cost Sony, if youre not careful Reggie you will learn the same lesson.

I dont care who innovated with it , and got it first .
What i care about is that the wii wasnt even close to 1:1 motion controls , and too much waggle stuff involved .
Looking back and beyond , most Nintendo’s great games dont even really use the wiimote than much , besides well the awesome metroid , and some optional driving style in Mario Kart .
Not saying Sony (or microsoft) will do better , but what they got seems promising enough in term of “core” gaming . I’m still waiting to see , but again i’m more confident with them than with nintendo .

he´s absoluteley right. it´s a complete rip off and they should be ashamed. they want a big piece of that casual gamer cake and the way they copied the wii is pretty cheap and not very creative. ms is trying this as well, but they found a more elegant way to do it imo…also it´s true that nintendo should be concerned. because with the ps3 and 360 joining the motion control casual game sector they become a direct competitor. now mom can practice some e-pseudoyoga, the little kids can play little kids casual games and the older kids and dad (also mom of course – don´t want to be a sexist) can play uncharted, mass effect, heavy rain…and all of them can watch a blu ray movie…

You have to admit though, with the three companies at each other’s throats it does tend to make for some particularly good entertainment.
I’m just going to sit back and watch this play out. Even if I don’t buy the technology there’s some pretty decent humour and schadenfreude to be had here.

I’d say it’s a little early to be saying Move is definitely better, particularly as it’s dependent on the quality of software. From a hardware perspective, it looks more precise, but that’s under controlled lighting conditions. Given my experiences with EyePet, I have a few concerns about it working perfectly in the home.

I can’t see lighting conditions being an issue for the actual controller, the ‘bulb’ emits light and can change colours to stand out more from the background; things like head tracking are another story, obviously.
That said it does of course come down to software in the end. Honestly I’m fairly optimistic about that angle, mainly because I’m not all that demanding: if I can play games like Killzone 3 with pointer controls that are well calibrated then that’s enough for me to pick up the peripheral, more original experiences are just a bonus on top of that.

Yeah, I think you’re probably right – I just think saying ‘Move’s better’ at this stage is a bit premature.

The problem I have with all of Reggie’s talking is that, while the Wii is a success, they’ve never really impressed/hit it out the park with motion controls; Everything works well, but you know there is room for expansion.
With Sony’s device, you get the quality of Ninty’s first party with the power of SCE hardware. Software implemetation is key, of course, but after a year or two, it should give Wii a run for its money.

If this is about giving credit where credit is due then let’s not embarrass ourselves by drifting into a my dad vs. your dad duel.
Nintendo’s ambition for innovation is enthralling, but methinks they didn’t necessarily realise the actual potential of the Wiimote until Johnny Chung Lee’s videos hit the internet back in 2007/8 (http://johnnylee.net/projects/wii/). Microsoft promptly gave Johnny a job, and it wasn’t too long until Natal was announced.

Natal was already around before 2007…

Partly true. If Wiki’s anything to go by, one Zack Rosenberg apparently invented the 3D camera motion recognition system and presented it to Iwata in 2007 but was turned down. Microsoft, however, took it on in 2008. Natal wasn’t formally announced until mid 2009.

Natal was invented by 3DV Systems and was being shown around for years. Sony tested a version of it back in 2004 for PS2. MS bought the company along with the tech.
Whilst Johnny Chung Lee is working on Natal he isnt responsible for inventing it.

The same way that the casual gamer may not know or care to trade up for the Move also will not be hearing all Reggie’s rants so he should stop ranting and put his energy into improving his product, God knows he needs to.

Fully agree with 2.
Playstation’s always been about the very broadest of experiences, and here, they’ve got the opportunity to add a very valuable string to their current-gen bow.
IF this pans out to be successful for them, with Move, and development is healthy in terms of software (1st and 3rd party), then that makes the PS3 a compelling FIRST console choice. That’s where they can edge out Nintendo, in a family household.
Microsoft are currently blowing hot air, and I don’t believe that they will have as much universal aoppeal in Natal, as Move is likely to generate.

Now i’ve had a think about it, I don’t mind this, because when the Wii was annouced they were at the butt of all the jokes, everyone laughed at them and called it a toy. Then it went and sold a billion zillion units and redefined the industry. I think this is just him getting revenge.
