Reggie: Competitors’ race to motion is “embarrassing”

NoA boss Reggie Fils-Aime has told Kotaku that Nintendo would have been “embarrassed” to be part of Microsoft and Sony’s catch-up to motion gaming.
“I think a hallmark of Nintendo is that we are constantly trying to innovate,” he said, speaking in the wake of Sony’s Move reveal at GDC this week.
“I think we would have been embarrassed to do what our competitors are currently doing.
“So, all I can tell you is that we will innovate. We will provide something new. Something that the consumer and the industry will look at and say ‘Wow, I didn’t see that coming.’”
Fils-Aime reiterated Nintendo’s refusal to come to market with new hardware until Wii has nothing left to give.
“When Mr Miyamoto goes to Mr Iwata say, ‘I have this great idea and I can’t do it on the Wii,’ that’s when there will be a next generation console,” he said.
“What that includes we’ll see. I think Mr Miyamoto himself has said that he is very interested in a high-definition experience, but to be 120 percent crystal clear, HD by itself in our view is not enough to go for a new console past the Wii.”
Lots more through there. Move and Natal ship later this year.

Reggie its imbarrassing to see from your SUPER INNOVATIVE company like Wii fit games and other crap. Its imbarassing how you sucked at last gen and you still suck even if you sell very well.
Miyamoto is the only designer and his team that deserve respect from Nintendo. Thats it.

To their credit, the DS *is* an innovative gaming device. It provided a completely new way to play games, and it worked really really well. There are tons of absolutely amazing games out there for it.
The Wii has always had potential, and there are a few games out that that certainly lived up to it. Gaming experiences I couldn’t get (and wouldn’t work) anywhere else, such as Super Mario Galaxy and Lost Winds. It’s just a pity there’s so much shovelware clogging up the pipes and blocking out the good stuff from most people’s sight.

Kinda agree with the embarassing part, those Move (Really preferred Arc) ‘demos’ were apparently underwhelming and Natal (Move would have been better for this) doesn’t seem* to be doing so well with the devs that want to talk about it (anon). However, like Michael said about Wii, these MC devices have potential. Its all (mostly) about 1st party with these things, anyway, so I can’t wait to see what Sony can do with their’s.

innovative?
is that why a previous employee tried to sue them over the patent of Wii?
And the Wii motion is not new!

What’s embarrassing is the amount of casual/party/shovelware games on your platform, mate.

Classy Reggie.
Of course the obvious scrum to get motion control into their respective consoles is pure reactionary, but yeah, thanks for proving that power = arrogance Reggie.
Now how about resurrecting some semblance of the Nintendo seal of quality, and stop your platform from being a shovel ware dumping ground.
