UK boxed product sales down 18% in 2009

Boxed UK game sales took a major hit in 2009, according to Chart-Track, with overall numbers down 18 percent for the year.

Overall boxed unit sales were down 12 percent, with only PS3 and 360 seeing an increase in units and revenue last year compared to 2008.

PlayStation 3 game sales were up 14 percent last year to 11.9 million, generating £342 million in revenue (up 2 percent).

Xbox 360 game sales rose 9 percent to 16.2 million units, generating £459 million (up 4 percent YoY).

Wii sold 18.1 million games last year, down 10 percent on 2008, generating £392 million in 2009 (down 18 percent), while DS unit sales were 14.6 million (down 24 percent) generating £266 million (down 27 percent).

Boxed PSP game sales dropped 32 percent to 2.8 million generating £44 million in revenue.
