Nintendo of America said today that, while sales data for December and all of 2009 will be revealed by the NPD Group on January 14, it's estimated that US consumers bought 3 million Wii units in December.

The company also estimates that DS and DSi set an all-time calendar-year US sales record for any console or handheld system, and that lifetime US sales of New Super Mario Bros. Wii will hit 4 million.

“The millions of people who bought Nintendo hardware during the holidays can look forward to enjoying great games on those systems now and in the future,” said NOA VP Cammie Dunaway.

“The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for Nintendo DS, and Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are all currently providing Nintendo fans with amazing experiences and fun adventures for the whole family.”

Earlier today, Nintendo announced that DS sold 40 million units in Europe and that Wii had passed the 20 million console mark.
