Alienware PCs to come pre-installed with Steam

alienwarelogol

Dell’s announced that all Alienware Area-51 and Aurora desktops and the M17x and M15x laptops are now to come pre-loaded with Steam and a free copy of Portal.

“Entertainment, specifically gaming, is a primary use of PCs in the home and on the road,” said Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve.

“Alienware is a household name among PC gamers who want the most out of their hardware. The combination of Alienware hardware and Steam equals a superior gaming experience.”

Don’t blink: you’ll wake up in a Valve-owned world. Full thing through the link.

The free £10 game doesn’t really make up for the massive over-pricing of the machines themselves.

Soooooo, I guess the EU is going to throw a hissyfit about this too, since Internet Explorer being pre-installed on PC’s made them go batshit crazy?

Hardware manufacturers can install any software they want on machines they build as long as it can be uninstalled by the owner after they’ve bought it.

The issue with IE initially was that in XP IE isn’t just a web browser, it is a part of the operating system and can’t be effectively uninstalled. Since Steam is just a normal piece of software there’s no foul.

I don’t love their laptops. The screen hinge on my M15X has broken twice now and whenever I send it in for repair they break other things.

It then takes another month waiting for them to fix the latest thing they’ve broken. Doing something helpful like expediting the repair because it’s their fault doesn’t seem to occur to them.

Correction: “Alienware is a household name among PC gamers who have too much money”.
