Nintendo: Next Metroid Prime might land on the DS

Metroid: The Other M may be hogging all the series’ face time right now, but Prime isn’t ready for the retirement home just yet. Speaking with ONM, Nintendo’s Kensuke Tanabe indicated that Metroid Prime’s next foray might be a return trip to the Nintendo DS.

“We are always planning to make new games in the Metroid Prime series. Depending on the timing and the situation, we cannot deny the possibility of realising it on DS or DSi,” he said.

Well gee, that’s a funny way of saying “new 2D Metroid on the DS.” That is what he meant, right?

He’s mentioned the Prime sub-title, which suggests to me this could be another FPS game rather than 2D. Metroid Prime Hunters had a fairly decent engine on the DS, so I could easily see them sprucing it up as a single player game.

I’d still much rather have a new 2D Metroid game though. Maybe Nintendo are suddenly interested in Metroid again thanks to Shadow Complex…
