Rumor: EA to announce closure of Pandemic today

thesaboteur

There’s a bit of a depressing rumor floating about today, which states that EA plans to announce the closure of Pandemic later today.

Sources close to Kotaku stated that almost all of the 200 staffers at the LA studio will be laid-off and the rest sent to other teams within EA.

It was also revealed by the source that EA Montreal will take over the remaining IP from Pandemic, which includes putting the finishing touches on The Saboteur.

While we’ve no reason to doubt this, what with EA laying-off left and right, its unconfirmed until EA announces something.

You could say Pandemic’s heyday was last gen with Full Spectrum Warrior and the Star Wars Battlefront games. Been a bit hit and miss since then. If only they’d done that current gen SW Battlefront sequel…

EA only bought them because they were in the same holdings company as Bioware. I think I said this in the lay off comments last week that Pandemic were probably going to be next on the firing line.

That sucks, if true.

They could have done Battlefront III if they had a deal done somewhat.

Were EA scared that Activision were running away with the “cuntyish games company” award?

I honnestly cant say i’m a fan of their work, the BattleFront games were ok but everything else (that i played anyway) was pretty sub-par.

@5

Laying people off isn’t something you do because you’re a cunt, it’s something you do to stop bleeding cash like they have been doing.

Saboteur’s supposed to be out in a couple of weeks – if it’s not done by now then I surmise we’re going to see a delay announced sometime very soon as well.

Poor old Pandemic, I always wondered whether they’d survive after the EA thing – it was fairly obvious from the start that EA only really wanted Bioware.

The quality of their games had been lacking, so if you’re mother company is loosing money left and right, no surprise you’d be on the hit list.

Since being taken over by the Borg, the quality has gone down hill – but thats an EA trade mark.

man, i hate them (“them” is everybody that is even slightly responsible for Battlefront 3 not beeing in developement).

i cant see anything else then plain stupidity beeing the cause for it not beeing on its way..

Am i the only one thinking BF3 would sell better then sabotuer? Not that sabotuer wouldnt be good, but hey, its star wars..

They were taken over by “New EA”, the leave the studios alone EA. And it worked, quality went up for the rest of the studios (Bioware is doing just fine, for example).
So it’s not that easy to pin the quality problems on just the take over.

That’s some rotten news :(

I’ve recently being going back through Mercenaries 2, and having loads of fun with it.

Lack lustre, playable enough, nothing that’d set the world on fire – are all terms I’d apply to Pandemic’s work on the current platforms. Saboteur has but a glimmer of hope of not also having those applied to it.
It’s a sorry outcome when people may stand to lose their jobs, though. :(
