During the SIGGRAPH 2009 conference in New Orleans, Crytek demoed the CryEngine 3 engine.

The video posted after the break, courtesy of Kotaku, shows off the lighting effects that can be pulled off using the engine.

Have a look.

Not sure what I’m looking at, but I’m hoping it translates into some awesome games! Can’t wait to see how Crysis 2 turns out on the consoles.

The lighting/shadows, it’s all real time rather than shadow maps, I think RAGE will use shadowmaps so this might be Cryteks edge over id, though id has figured out how to bypass ram concerns regarding textures.

am i wrong in my memory recall of the cryengine 3 being a graphical downgrade from the cryengine 2?

a way of getting a development platform on the consoles that they can actually render at more then 8fps.

The original Crysis was criticised for its poor quality:resources ratio, they better sort that out.

Jadeskye: You are wrong in that, it’s not a downgrade on the pc in comparison to CE2, just it’s being heavily pushed for it’s console usage right now, so that’s what’s been shown so far, which can’t quite match what the PC can due to memory limitations.

Well, lets hope they dont skim on the PC version (which they probably will). Crysis is an amazing game and the graphics are a great part of it. It’ll be such a shame if Crysis 2 cant compare to the original
