The Birdman himself’s just dropped the first details on his new Ride controller on Twitter, calling the just-announced peripheral a “marvel”.
“The board controller is a marvel of new technology,” said Hawk.
“Responds like a real skateboard. You can even go for grabs and the sensors detect it.”
Tony Hawk Ride was announced this morning, making the first show of what looks to be a very snazzy plastic skateboard.
This really is going to be the ultimate in self-esteem destruction. Grown men, bent over on a piece of plastic in front of an HD TV, making “pretend” grabs on the stained carpet. Shouting “sweet”. All alone.
It’s out later this year.

Whilst I entirely agree with Mr giga (for once) I’m thinking of all those people who ask why people don’t get a real guitar instead of a plastic one and guitar hero.

Because Guitar Hero and Rock Band are fun social games that still manage to retain a level of hardcore challenge to them for those willing to dive into it.
This is… a plastic keyboard.
Lord forbid Activision could just bother to try and make a decent skating game.

Yes, I agree. Guitar Hero, you could argue, was different as it released with the peripheral just as the series came out over here in the West (sure, we know Guitar Freakz was out long before but it was never popular here).
Tony Hawks though, it’s almost as those this peripheral is a last ditch attempt to get the series moving again. Using the wii board makes sense for it but what other games will use it on the 360/ps3? I am dubious – there is a fine line between game control realism and then just going out and doing stuff with a real skateboard. I sense those folk who want realism will just go out and actually skate.

I find the “Why not get a real NNNN” line of thought a bit flawed. There will be a world of difference between this and real skating, just as it is with Guitar Hero or Wii sports.
The lerning curves won’t be anywhere near each other. Neither will the effort involved.
I still think this feels too much like a “It worked for Guiter Hero” and “Shit, what should we do now that SKATE kicked our asses” kind of thing. Maybe they should have laid off for a few years. Let things cool down. Done other games.

I dispise peripherals. My sytem, controller, games, headset, and wires take up enough space as is. BIG fan of Tony Hawk, but I’ll PASS on this for SURE….thanks.
