Shadow of the Colossus movie on the way

According to this FirstShowing story, a Shadow of the Colossus movie is to be developed by producer Kevin Misher (Fighting, Public Enemies, Case 39) at Columbia Pictures.
There’s no date through there, or any other detail at all for that matter. Reports of the film containing an awful lot of horse-riding are unconfirmed at this time.

I like that you link him to movies that haven’t made an impact yet, I hadn’t heard of them at least. While he is also the guy behind somewhat big, Scorpion King, the Interpreter, The Run-down and upcoming Dune.
All this makes me think that Dwayne Johnson AKA The Rock is going to be cast as a 12 yr old kid who likes his horse.

We already have a Shadow of the Colossus movie anyway – Reign Over Me.

What’s really annoying me is that if it was done really well I think it’d make a great film. It’s got a great plot twist for a start…
Except, it won’t be done well, will it ? Bah.

Ground rules:
(a) No dialogue
(b) No Adam Sandler
(c) No wisecracking sidekick/gratuitous hot girl accomplice
(d) Get the guy who did 300 to do it
(e) Don’t change the ending
(f) DON’T FUCK WITH ME

“Ground rules:

Considering the general ambiguity of the game’s story, a back-story is more than likely. If they want to do this smartly, I would expect the character’s battles to be interspersed with flashbacks that explains why he’s here and why he’s trying to save this girl.
This could be good if it stays faithful. I’m going to try and stay optimistic for now.
“(d) Get the guy who did 300 to do it”
Why, so we can turn a creative art piece in a glorified, testosterone-fuelled style-fest?

NO. BAD. IN YOUR BED.
One of the game’s beauties is that it doesn’t need exposition. There’s a guy, there’s a girl, one is trying to save the other, end of. And the 300 guy should do it because style-fests are endlessly preferable to bland cliche, which seems to be a Justin Marks (script writer) specialism. We’ve got to make the best of a bad business

I’d be quite happy with a 2-hour video of the game being played. Especially if they use the original music.

Yes, one of the GAME’S beauties.
That isn’t going to work in the context of a movie though. And there’s nothing inherently wrong with adding more exposition to it for a movie, as long as the inherent feel and concept is left intact.

I get the sudden urge to play it again. I wonder if my son would like it?

There’s nothing in the game’s plot which point-blank relies on the player being a player, rather than a watcher. You could sit in front of a two hour video of somebody steaming through SotC, and the narrative wouldn’t be any less comprehensible.
We learn everything we need to learn about Wander from the introductory cut-scene. It’s a tale of archetypes, personifications – the mourner, the lost love – not particular characters with a particular history. Piling on a bunch of flashbacks to “fill in the picture” beyond the valley would scupper that purity. Less is more.

christ.
this movie is almost guaranteed to suck. games like sotc are pretty rare and you just know that the film is going to go all hollywood and suck the life out of it.
no doubt there’s going to be some goddamn love story that takes over. yes i know there’s that girl on the slab but lets face it: you kill the collossus, back to the temple place, cut scene, try and look up her dress, shoot agro in the face and you’re off. i do not want some bullshit “oooh i love you so much.” “oh but i love youuuu” “haha i love youuuuu”. *gets chainsaw*
keep the love story bullshit to an absolute minimum and the film may stand a chance.
and i was happy when agro had a slight bit of misfortune near the end.

Slight…?
I’d hate to experience your idea of massive misfortune then.
Like Blerk this makes me want to play it through again…goes hunting for his disc and Nico dvd…

Why would they do this?
They’re going to tack on a cheesy love story or some other equally lame explanation for the events of the game and thereby ruin the entire mystique that so endeared many to the game.
And probably add in some annoying Jar Jar Binks-esque sidekick to tail Wander around.
Might even turn Argo into a tank so that joe public can better relate to him.

Hollywood bastardisation.
I don’t care, good luck with it. I’d be happy if it weren’t financially motivated. IF a director picked it up and said, hell this is awesome, let me reinterpret it then, then that’s actually not so bad.
But the fact it’s a money movie kills me.

Umm, didnt I hear some movie director absolutely loved SOTC? What about him, he was interviewed by Edge I believe.

Yeah, but it’s different being isnpried by it and being a fan.
Sure he could do it if he thought there was somethign worthwhile to interpret.
Del Toro by the way.
