Sony: DSi’s for “kids”

dsi14

SCEA marketing boss John Koller sent out a statement over the weekend essentially saying that DSi is for children, while PSP targets “diverse demographics”.

DSi launched in both the US and Europe last week. Here’s the missive in full:

If Nintendo is really committed to reaching a broader, more diverse audience of gamers beyond the “kids” market that they’ve always engaged, there isn’t much new with the DSi to support that. Significant gamer demographic groups are being ignored, and there continues to be limited opportunities for games from external publishers to do well on the DSi. Compare that with the PSP platform, where we have many blockbuster franchises from our publishing partners launching this year, representing a wide variety of genres and targeting diverse demographics. Games such as Rock Band Unplugged from MTV Games, Assassin’s Creed from Ubisoft, Dissidia Final Fantasy from Square Enix, and Hannah Montana from Disney demonstrate the commitment that publishers have to the PSP. From our own first-party studios, we’re launching unique versions of LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm, and we’re also planning a steady stream of downloadable games — both new titles and PSone classics — to add to the content that PSP owners can already purchase wirelessly through PlayStation Store.

Thanks, Engadget.

“It should be pretty clear that they’re strongly focussed on owning a particular demographic.”

And the 50 million PSPs clearly show they’ve succeeded, with an almost complete focus on core games aimed at the mature demographic.

The DS may have sold 100 million units, but as already said, a huge portion of that market is different to the demographic interested in a machine like the PSP.

Hey PT, you go for it! Just so long as we don’t get people dismissing statements from ‘way back when’ when it suits them to apply doublestandards.

There’s a fuck ton of games out on DS and I’ve seen about 3 that actually use the dual screen / touch screen ‘innovation’ in an ungimmicky way and do something with videogames that could not be done any other way. Making a virtual button on a screen is just the same as having a regular button – so that rules out about 95% of instances we’ve all seen. Conversely, I’ve seen many games on DS gimped because something that would work better with regular buttons has been made worse due to insisting it be done with unnecessary and gimmicky touch-controls.

The three games I’d recommend as justifying the DS’s screens/touch are:

- GTA Chinatown Wars
(awesome PDA emulation – but there’s some very shitty touch-screen minigame crap in there too)

- Rettai Picross
(Dual screen is a gimmick but the touch-control makes the 3D puzzles quite manageable)

- Ouendan
(Entertaining use of dual screens – though nothing actually enhancing to gameplay, but stunning use of touch controls)

The other 3,500+ titles are pretty gimmicky.

“theevilaires said: You’re a Retard?”

Can’t you post anything without attacking someone with personal insults? People can own machines without being die-hard fans of it. Blerk is someone who was pretty much entirely PS2 the last generation and only recently upgraded to a current-generation machine.

So ner :P

Are you some internet article web page keeper or something?
Do you work for the C.I.A.?
Do you have an alien probe stuck up your anus?
Do you take Morriss to be your lawfully married Husband/Wife?
Do you enjoy game sites more than video games?
Do you “HATE” Sony as a company in general?

If you answered YES to any of these questions you are a XBOT

HoC, you STILL haven’t answered that question. :D

Now, instead of deflecting it you’re trying to dismiss it as not being about the DS/DSi simply because more people are complaining about the Wii than the DS as far as you’re concerned. Which is odd because this entire topic/outrage/”OH NO HE DI’ENT” diatribe is based all on Nintendo’s perceived direction with the DS/DSi not the Wii.

Read that first sentence again.

Your evasiveness and excuses are starting to double-back on you now. :)

It’s ok though. I think your reluctance to answer the question is answer enough!

@ Michael O’Connor: Please explain how you can take an entire statement out of context.

@ Shatner: you’ve spent so long going around the houses with regard to my comparison of the PSP and the DS that I’ve forgotten what the original question was. Please remind me and I’ll answer it.

I already reminded you once. I even put it in italics. You even acknowledged the question!

Like I said. It doesn’t matter now. If you wanted to answer it you would have done so.

So, we’re in agreement: DSi is shit and Wii is for babies. Excellent.

Okay.

What differences in the DSi over the DS directly address the existing criticisms that Nintendo have been recieving (from gamers, not from Sony) regarding the breadth of their content?

Well, I’ve seen very little evidence of criticisms of breadth of content on DS, but assuming it’s as prevalent as you seem to be suggesting, then in truth the DSi doesn’t offer much above and beyond what the DS currently offers bar some downloadable games and the potential for future Virtual Console content (which is just a matter of time). The problem in the first place is that the DS does offer a good breadth of content (apart from, perhaps, that apparently gigantic majority of 15-25 year olds who only like to shoot things and drive things because they’re so incredibly mature) so the point is pretty moot.

Where, in any of these criticisms has anyone asked for any of the USPs that the DSi offers over the DS?

I imagine quite a few people wanted downloadable games. The media capabilities? Not many, probably. Certainly not music in AAC format and two poor-quality (albeit hugely flexible) cameras. So, I suppose in one sense you could argue that Koller’s point that the DSi isn’t reaching new markets is true. However, he made the mistake of saying that the DS didn’t already reach beyond the ‘kids market’. Which is false.

So, my PSP question, then. Well, I guess it doesn’t matter now. If you wanted to answer it you would have done so.
