GDC: God of War III runs at 60fps, and sometimes 30fps

In what has to be the most exciting GDC 09 story this morning, God of War III programmers Jim Tilander and lead game programmer Vassily FilipPov have unveiled to a knowledge-hungry GDC crowd that God of War III will run at 60fps. Some of the time.
It’ll have to drop down to 30fps to cope with some scenarios, said the developers.
Apparently the pair were so hyped about hardcore development tools that Kotaku described them as “sounding more like PS3 salesmen than programmers, as they expounded on the many benefits of running a Synergistic Processing Unit.”
Sounds awesome. It’s all through the link.

So it doesn’t run at 60fps, then.
What an odd thing to say.

Depends on the frequency and situations of the scenarios. If it’s 60fps for the vast majority but 30 fps for a couple of big boss battles then fair enough. If it’s 60fps for a couple of cut scenes and 30fps for the scenario of “the rest of the game” then not so good.

Loltaku taking processor-level programming matters and watering them down to a form their luddite audience can relate to is like The Sun having an astrophysics column.

LOL
What a stupid claim. I’d rather play a game locked to 30fps than one that keeps flipping between the two.
TMNT does that.
Messes with your eyes…

tenthousandgothsonacid, I made a proposition and kept to my word. Don’t worry, the haters will still have plenty of stuff to get all upset about, I’m sure.

@G1GA
So you’d rather play a game at 30fps than one which maintains 60fps for 95% of the game time?

I’m with G1GA on this one. There’s a lot to be said for consistency. Also, if you’re counting the frames then you’re missing the gmae.

My point is that without some proper information of how often it dips to 30fps then passing judgement is silly. If it is constantly switching in and out then it would be noticeable and bad. If they know certain situations are going to cause the frame rate to drop then lock those at 30fps then it wouldn’t be such an issue no?

Nah, definitely not.
We don’t have any details, but the way that it’s put, it seems like it’s going to be running at 30fps more than 5% of the time.
After all, if it was my game, and that was the case, I’d just come out and say “The game runs at 60fps 95% of the time.” It’s much more impressive.
TMNT seems to hit around 60fps about 30% of the time, and it just makes me feel like the other 70% of the time the game isn’t working properly.

Skate 2 fluctuated *badly* on the PS3 and was largely unplayable because of it. Warning people about this now smacks of damage limitation

“Skate 2 fluctuated *badly* on the PS3 and was largely unplayable because of it”
That’s not my experience at all. I loved it.
There’s a patch out for skate 2 this week btw, one of the unmentioned features is that you can now turn off the vsync on the ps3 if you want.
A variable framerate or tearing. Still, at least it’s a choice…
