GDC: Watch Rock N’ Roll Climber demoed in Iwata keynote

rocknrollclimber

There’s a video after the break of Rock N’ Roll Climber being demoed in the Iwata keynote at GDC this morning.

It shows a badly realised man scaling a wall. A person controls the hands and feet of said man using a Wiimote, a Nunchuck and a Balance Board.

It’s not pretty. See for yourself.

A hardware set costing two hundred and fifty pounds to pay diabolical crap like this?

Jesus Fucking Christ, how are they getting away with this torrent of shite?

I just don’t even want to think about Nintendo anymore.

I just don’t know… It’s just disgusting.

You know, trash like this might actually give cloud-gaming a slightly more than non-existent chance of taking off.

Just so they can get away from this kind of crap.

You do all realise it’s WiiWare, right?

Fucking Chris on a spitroast!

I’m warming up my facial muscles for the sheer amount of grimacing this atrocity of a game will illicit from me. I expect to see it sell 10 million copies, outselling every decent game for the next 12 months, and making me cry inside.

Wiiware is just a delivery method, it doesn’t exuse a bad game.

Well, it’s just a bit of experimental daftness for a few quid, innit? It’s not as if this is a full-price first-party Wii game. Besides, it might actually be alright to play. It looks awkward and pretty ugly to me, but the hysterical response it’s getting here is a bit silly. And it won’t sell a million copies because it’s a niche WiiWare game. So that kind of talk is way off the mark.

That does look absurd. The response from people seems justified since this was allotted time in a GDC keynote. You think Nintendo would show something that didn’t look like it was programmed in a basement. in the dark. with no power source. and by someone with no hands. or eyes. or notion of fun. or creative flair. or production values. or an inkling of what gamers enjoy. or an inkling of what anyone enjoys. or a knowledge of Nintendos own previous standards. or of anyones standards.

and it looks like the most awkward controlling game I’ve seen in a long time.

^ Exactly. Worry when even the demo at a keynote during GDC looks as awkward as fuck!

What people seem to be forgetting is that this is a conference for developers. It’s not for gamers. And if Nintendo wants to show off a game using remote and nunchuk and the balance board as a way of showing how you can utilise them together – okay, it’s not the best example – then why not?

The reaction here is like Iwata’s shot someone’s dog. It’s an experimental bit of stuff and nonsense for a few quid – it’s not representative of Nintendo’s 2009 output.

Its so ugly and stupid it could kill a dog though :D

Not saying they’re not allowed to do or show anything. Saying it looks like complete and utter crap wherever and to whomever they show it.

…and, personally, I would not file this under “what the Wiimote/Fit board can do” rather under “what you should not do with the Wiimote/Fit board”.

@ Cort – this is what you said: “A hardware set costing two hundred and fifty pounds to pay diabolical crap like this?

Jesus Fucking Christ, how are they getting away with this torrent of shite?”

That suggests that it’s representative of Nintendo’s entire output and that people would want to buy a Wii to play the game. Which is utter nonsense.

Still, there are no guns in it and it’s not in HD, so it’s hardly surprising that ‘hardcore’ gamers are a bit nonplussed by it. ;)

Is this a first party title?
