GDC: Sony cutting price of PS3 dev kits

ps33

Sorry, we’re late with this. Sony’s confirmed it’s to drop the price of PS3 dev kits by over 80 percent to $2,000, down from $10,240.

The move will be seen as hugely welcome, and give a clear indication that Sony’s about to make a serious effort to get PS3 moving this year.

We should have plenty mroe Sony news from GDC in the next few days.

Why would a dev-kit price drop ever lead to a drop in the price of the consumer unit?

Anyway, that’s a hell of a drop. About time they did something to encourage developers to get stuck in. Anyone know how much Microsoft charge for theirs?

Blerk shot you down from your cloud.

He’s like that.

No idea about the cost of a 360 devkit. But chnaces are they are pretty similar now, if the PS3 devkit was fucking $10,000 and is now $2,000.

Great great news, along with the Phyre engine news.

I did a bit of searching to try and find out, but couldn’t get anything recent.

Apparently PS3 kits were nearly $20k to begin with and dropped to $10k in late 2007 to ‘price match the 360 kits’. So 360 kits might well still be $10k. Although not for long, I suspect. :-D

Still it’s great news for tiny/indie developers, and probably great news for Japanese developers more to the point.

$2,000, compared to $10,000, is kind of the right percentage of their market in comparison to NA. So yeah, it’s more appropriate.

The machines that the software companies buy in order to allow them to develop games for the PS3. They’re not for the likes of us.

It’s a version of the console, which developers can manipulate, to test their code (game) on.

Well now, if you want to, you can buy 5 PS3 devkits. Or just one for $2000.
