Sony: PS3 will always have Blu-ray

Janco’s Mike Hickey’s prediction that a Blu-ray-less PS3 may be in the works suffered something of a blow today when Sony, unsurprisingly, said that there isn’t.

“That would pretty much destroy the PS3′s backbone,” Sony marketing manager Kim Nguyen told SAI.

“Our games were built on Blu-ray. Quote that: Blu-ray will always be part of PS3.”

Hickey also said he expected a PS3 price cut to be announced within days, in a note at the end of February.

Still waiting, Mike.

Analysts are totally worth the money. They’re absolutely invaluable to the industry.

Also, cars will always have wheels.

What a stupid idea… The PS3 with no blu-ray doesn’t do anything, apart from anything involving downloaded games from PSN.

I do hope that analysts who put forward such ridiculous claims are pulled up on them when they’re proven wrong.

Can I suggest a new “No Shit Sherlock” tag?

To be fair, he was saying that retail channels had heard a blu-ray-less ps3 was on the cards, he wasn’t predicting it himself. Doesn’t make it any less bollocks though. And his price cut was a bit premature.

PS3 with Blu-ray drive but lacking Blu-ray movie playback could have been the rumor as isn’t BR playback licensing fairly expensive ?

It’s such a complete non-starter, if I was an investor employing that firm I’d certainly be thinking twice about it following that.
