Report: XBL has earned 500% more revenue than PSN

psnlogoa2

Variety reports that, despite Sony having 20 million registered PSN users, Xbox Live has made Microsoft more than five times as much in its lifetime.

The story says that Sony may have accumulated $180 million from PSN in the last two years, but it’s a paltry sum compared to the $1 billion earned by Xbox Live in the last five-and-a-half.

Essentially, PSN has been around about 40 percent as long as Xbox Live, but made less than 20 percent of the revenue.

Lots more through there.

$1 Billion seems quite a small amount of revenue for XBL if you include the subscription fee…

$1billion / $60 = 16 Million subs paid
16million / 5 years = 3.3Million subscribers

Now I think a recent report said that currently over 50% of the 17-20million XBL subscribers pay for gold so lets assume that currently there are 9 million paying XBL Gold members. That means than an average of 3.3 Million paying subscribers over the past 5 years is possible but then what about all the revenue from XBL Arcade games, Movies, Gamertag changes, Gamerpics/backgrounds, TV Shows etc?

I think that number has to be wrong, or it doesn’t include the subscriptions…

Even if it doesn’t include subscriptions, it stands to reason that someone who pays to use the service every month, would be more likely to spend money on other things. Microsoft give hardly anything away for free. Personally I’m amazed they haven’t started charging us for demo’s yet.

I’m willing to bet that the cost of demos is included in the subs price, hence the Gold/Silver differentiation on release dates.

Like I said before, Sony must be kicking themselves about not charging for PSN.

It’s basically easy money for MS, and now self confessed ‘profits driven’ Sony can only stand by the side and look at the figures of all of the money that they’re losing.

If you ask me, it’s only a matter of time before they bring out some sort of premium service other than that Qore thingy.

money money money, I say good on Sony for not charging for PSN, give it time, if the rumours about the UMD-less PSP are true, that will be another source of revenue, I know 2 people with 360′s and neither of them have live subs.

What kind of dumb pos feels the need to talk down on a company that allows us to play our videgames online, together, for free? Even worse what kind of pos hints at said company charging for said service in the future?

oh that’s g1gahurtz.

no one but an xbox fanboy wants to hear you speak.

I’ll be laughing even louder when Sony can’t support the PS3 anymore, and the PS4 gets canned because they’re not making enough profit.

All because of a string of stupid decisions like not charging for something that millions of people are more than willing to pay for.

So enjoy your free gaming and the fact that it’s making Sony suffer!

Hey Sport Billy!

What’s your name again?

It’s somewhere on this site, but I can’t be bothered to search…

I want to see if you’re on facebook and what not.

You might as well tell me.

I’ll find it sooner or later.

Anyone else know?
