Sony patents weird sound-light controller thing

ps3controller.jpg

Someone on NeoGAF’s dug up some pictures of a new Sony controller patent, depicting a device that wouldn’t look out of place in a “special internet video.”

Apparently it uses a mix of light and sound to determine distance, and so on, and includes an accelerometer for motion detection.

Squillions of people have been touting this as the break-apart PS3 controller talked about about earlier this year.

It looks rubbish, visually, but I bet it’s actually pretty good to use.

I’ll stick to a normal pad thanks

I had no idea Sony was in the biz of making light meters… no wait ultra-sound wands. Wow. Yes that will restore them to the throne… the porcelain kind.

I think David and mortiferus are a double act. You guys certainly play your parts well. ;)
Having said that, from that image above it looks like you’re holding someone else’s penis.

Still, there are many many more patents filed than reach fruition as consumder products so this is all likely to be a big nothing.

Controls NEVER make the game. They won’t make bad gameplay into good gameplay. They’re not some magic formula.

The preposterous notion that controls automatically act like a silver bullet for games that’s been hammered home by narrow-minded idiots for the last few years (thanks Nintendo faithful, you dumbasses!) is, thankfully, being proved to be quite absurd as this generation continues.

…….shatner I’m not into waggling my arms about while playing a game a normal pad will do me fine.

Wait a second!?!? Surely that’s copyright infringement; haven’t Lynx made one of those? Oh but it’s ok I’m sure they won’t sue unless they need their roll-on deodorant to start a gaming platform….

It’s even got the little clit tickler… superb! \o/

That’s not entirely fair to David, Shat. He just had an honest opinion about “gaming wands”, and I’d actually have to agree with him. However, Mort’s porcelain throne comment does mark him as a somewhat unimaginative and predictable Sony basher, so I’d have to agree with you there.

And Gods damn it, everyone beat me to it. That thing is phallic, there’s a certain duality to it as it would probably have a second purpose that has nothing to do with gaming. I want one just to stand up vertically in front of my PS3, just to see how many people comment on it.
