Japanese software sales, October 20-26
Or more aptly named, the “So long Wii Music” edition. Miyamoto’s latest debuted last week at number one in the Media Creat charts with 92,000 sales, and has been unceremoniously banished to mid-table this week with a mere 38,000 copies sold.
Everyone wants to be fit, Shigeru. Not everyone wants to play a tamborine.
Thanks, ChartGet.

Quite a poor week in general. Terrible first week for the new Castlevania, there.

Perhaps Wii music won’t be the hit everyone seemed certain about. I’ve seen so many posts saying “it’s shit but it’ll sell zillions” recently but couldn’t quite see the reasoning.
Personally I think the game is a little bit of genius. Quite unique and utterly charming. Mine and my brothers kids all ‘got’ the game instantly (4 girls aged between 3 & 10). And when I had a chance I spent an hour or two making terrible versions of well known songs myself.
The thing that struck me was how hard it actually is to make music. The game has been belittled because it chooses the note for you but in practice you need far more skill than you do with something like Guitar Hero. Not that it should be compared with a game like that. It’s a completely different animal.

That’s actually quite a good week for the new Castlevania. It should certainly beat sales of the last two on DS. It’s always been niche.
And yeah, shame about Wii Music. And John’s right – it’s easy to make noise, but hard to make something that sounds great.
