The Splatoon 2 Hero Weapons can be found throughout the single player campaign (Hero Mode), but there's a slight catch if you then want to take them and be able to use the Hero Weapons in online matches. Splatoon 2 - How to Unlock Every Hero Weapon

There are a variety of Splatoon 2 Hero Weapons, all of which can be first unlocked for use in the single player Hero Mode campaign. We'll run down the levels in the game in which you automatically unlock Hero Weapons:

• Hero Shot - Unlocked in Lair 1
• Hero Roller - Unlocked in Lair 4
• Hero Dualies - Unlocked in Lair 5
• Hero Charge - Unlocked in Lair 6
• Hero Slosher - Unlocked in Lair 10
• Hero Splatling - Unlocked in Lair 13
• Hero Blaster - Unlocked in Lair 19
• Hero Brella - Unlocked in Lair 20
• Hero Brush - Unlocked in Lair 22

These are the specific levels in which Sheldon gives you brand new weapons, which you can then use throughout the Splatoon 2 single player campaign. You can use any of the Hero Weapons above in any level you want, provided it isn't a level in which Sheldon forces you to use a specific weapon of his choice.

Splatoon 2 - How to Unlock Hero Weapons for Multiplayer

You might only have to complete the single player of Splatoon 2 once through to unlock all the Hero Weapons, but this doesn't mean you've unlocked them for your Inkling to use in online matches of Turf War, Tower Control, or Splat Zones.

In order to unlock a single Hero Weapon for online use, you'll have to beat every single Lair level in the single player campaign, using only that one Hero Weapon. This includes Boss levels too, which means you're in for a particularly tough time if you want to beat the Octo Shower boss using a short range weapon like the Hero Dualies.

This is all to help Sheldon complete his research for the Hero Weapons, and once you've completed every Lair level with one Hero Weapon, Sheldon will tell you that his research for that weapon is complete, and you can therefore take it into Splatoon 2 online matches.
