Sony led Japanese market in 2010, besting both Wii and DS

Famitsu's publisher Enterbrain has done some figuring, and its numbers conclude that Sony hardware outsold Nintendo in Japan during 2010. According to the firm, not only did PS3 surpass Wii in sales, but PSP came out ahead of DS as well.

Citing figures for the period of March 29, 2010 - March 27, 2011, PSP outsold the entire DS line by a little over 100,000 units, with an even smaller margin separating PS3 and Wii.

While life-to-date figures for each hardware offering show Nintendo as the clear winner, Sony came out on top for the year for the first time ever, according to Enterbrain.

  • PSP: 2,640,499 (16,867,853 - LtD)
  • NDS: 2,523,142 (32,598,870 - LtD)
  • PS3: 1,407,126 (6,341,950 - LtD)
  • Wii: 1,397,498 (11,534,590 - LtD)
  • Nintendo 3DS: 801,423
  • Xbox 360: 195,563 (1,448,665 - LtD)

However, software was completely different animal altogether, and as usual, Nintendo ruled the roost in that respect. The only non-Nintendo published title in the top five belonged to Capcom with Monster Hunter Portable 3rd.

  • Pokemon Black & White (Pokemon, DS, released 9/18): 5,149,022
  • Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (Capcom, PSP, 12/1): 4,372,182
  • Wii Party (Nintendo, Wii, 7/8): 1,826,857
  • Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 (Square Enix, DS, 4/28): 1,283,423
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo, Wii, 5/27): 956,853

Total market sales for the period came in at 472.6 billion yen, which is a shrinkage of 14 percent year-over-year, and down 13.9 percent compared to 2009's 549.07 billion yen.

Hardware sales were down 21 percent year-over-year to170.68 billion yen, and software was down 9.3 percent to 301.92 billion yen.
