Analysis firm EEDAR has estimated that 51 percent of PS3 and Xbox 360 owners have purchased downloadable content through their consoles over the last 12 months.
The firm's findings suggest DLC purchases are up 40 percent compared to 2010 and 34 percent compared to 2009. EEDAR attributed the increase to better broadband speeds and DLC marketing increases.
Of those surveys who didn't purchase DLC, 47 percent said privacy was their main concern, while 11 percent cited poor quality as a reason to skip a purchase. Other reasons cited were no-return polices, the cost, and a lack of demos and free content.
EEDAR stated that if developers and console manufacturers work together to address these concerns, the industry could generate an extra $600 million in revenue in North America alone each year.
The firm also estimates that downloadable content in North America will generate over $875 million in revenue during 2011, with analyst Jesse Divnich predicting DLC revenue in the region will exceed $1 billion in 2012.
