Capcom's core Resident Evil team is busy with VR

Resident Evil 7 is probably a long way off; the team responsible for the series has its hands full.

Capcom's Development Division 1, the core in-house teams led by Jun Takeuchi which have traditionally developed the main Resident Evil series, is working on virtual reality projects at the moment.

"At present, we are focusing our energy on challenging the virtual reality (VR) game market," the publisher said of DD1 in its latest Integrated Report, as spotted by GamesIndustry.

"In this terrifying world, you can twist and turn as you like, but there's no escaping the creatures closing in on you - until you remove your VR headset and return to reality, that is."

This refers to the Kitchen demo Capcom quietly showed off behind closed doors at E3 2015, which I would go as far as a maiming to get a look at. The publisher said "the response was excellent" to this demo, and that DD1 is now building an engine specifically for VR, which it called "the hottest market right now".

For those of you not onboard the VR hype train, the good news is DD1 is "simultaneously developing titles for current game consoles".

"We have just set sail on our latest voyage," the statement added. It's not clear if this refers to Umbrella Corps or an additional unannounced project, but DD1 is a pretty big group so anything could happen.

Capcom's other three development divisions are currently focused on online services including Street Fighter; Monster Hunter, Sengoku Basara and Ace Attorney; and bringing games to China and Southeast Asia.
