Marvel vs Capcom Infinite's first big tournament looks epic thanks to massive comebacks and 260-hit combos

Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite just got its first large-scale tournament run-out, and it produced some pretty amazing results.

For all of its problems with rough visuals and its viral, comical-looking limited edition, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite has a lot of excellent stuff going on. In our review, I said the game had enormous competition potential - and that claim is already being backed up by the game's first major post-launch appearance on a tournament stage at the 2017 Southern California Regionals, also known as SCR.

The tournament was home to some brilliant matches, most of which can be found on the archive of Capcom's official CapcomFighters Twitch page - but a few particular moments deserve calling out. If you were one of those people left entirely unconvinced by Infinite or put off by its sometimes cheap-looking visuals, these clips show how the game still has something really special going on.

First up, here's an incredible comeback on the part of veteran player Richard Nguyen against former EVO champion Ryan 'FChamp' Ramirez. FChamp looks like he's heading for an easy win - possibly even a perfect - when Nguyen suddenly shows up with an incredible comeback led by some really beautiful play. Honestly, it's brilliant. Just watch it above, it's a brilliant two-minute match.

Then there's this - FChamp absolutely styling on another player who is seemingly helpless to stop him - and this time there's no stopping him. This is an absolute steam-rolling, but it shows the potential Infinite has in terms of combos, with FChamp racking up over 260 consecutive hits, leading commentators dumbfounded.

If this all looks confusing, you're not alone - but honestly, Marvel's unique, flashy mechanics can be learned in a relatively reasonable amount of time.

For all its faults, Marvel is looking pretty good, it seems - and its easily-excited, loud-mouthed, vibrant tournament presence seems to be alive and well.
